History

[return to top of this report]

Check Point Software Technologies was founded in 1993 by Gil Shwed, Marius Nacht, and Shlomo
Kramer, who envisioned creating the industry’s most secure, powerful, and
easy-to-use network security devices. The company’s first product, FireWall-1, debuted in 1994. Shortly after its introduction, the company
released a new version
that used encryption and key management technology licensed from RSA Security.
Check Point opened its US subsidiary in 1995.

The company also developed some of the earliest virtual network software, VPN-1,
for secure private network
communications. In 2009, Check Point introduced its Software Blade
Architecture to provide various security offerings that are customizable for any
business security need. The same year, the company completed its
acquisition of Nokia’s security appliance business and acquired FaceTime
Communications’ application database, which provided security controls for more
than 50,000 Web 2.0 widgets and over 4,500 Internet applications to its security
gateways. In 2015, Check Point acquired Lacoon Mobile Security for $100
million.

More than 100,000 organizations are protected by Check Point
products.

CloudGuard (secure the cloud), and Harmony (secure users and access) components.
Together, these three pillars form the company’s Infinity-Vision approach, unifying
security management to prevent fifth generation (“Gen V”) cyber attacks that move

In May 2020, Vice Chair Jerry Ungerman was appointed Chair, succeeding company
founder Marius Nacht.1 Nacht, who announed he would not stand for reelection
at the 2020 annual general meeting, served as a director of Check Point since its
founding in 1993 and had been Board Chair since September 2015. In his time with the
company, he served in numerous management positions including research and development,
products, sales, marketing, and support. Nacht intends to focus on Nacht Philanthropic
Ventures that he founded to provide humanitarian aid and address food insecurity, social
welfare, and cultural issues and activities.

Although not known for acquiring other firms, Check Point announced that it bought
cloud-email security vendor Avanan in August 2021. Check Point states that Avanan’s
technology is the only unified solution in the market to protect remote workers from
malicious files, URLs, and phishing across collaboration suites, the Web, networks, and
endpoints. News source CRNreports the purchase price was between $250 million and
$300 million.2

The company’s threat intelligence operation, Check Point Research, issued an October 2021
report saying that it found 40 percent more cyber attacks weekly on organizations in 2021
compared with 2020.3 “In September 2021, the average weekly number of attacks on each
organization globally reached its peak with over 870 attacks.”3 The company states
this is more than double the number of attacks recorded in March 2020 at the start of the
COVID-19 pandemic. Check Point also observed that an average of one out of every 61
organizations globally have been impacted by ransomware each week during 2021. Internet
service providers and managed service providers were the most affected sectors, followed
by healthcare and software vendors.
