History
[return to top of this report]
NTT DATA’s history began in 1967 when Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public
Corporation (NTT) created its DATA Communications Bureau. The DATA
Communications Bureau later was reorganized into the Data Communications
Division. In 1988, NTT DATA Communications was spun off from the parent
company. NTT DATA became a systems integrator in 1990. It obtained ISO 9001
certification in 1998 and ISO 14001 certification the following year. In 2010,
NTT DATA acquired Keane, a business and technology outsourcing firm that
served Global 2000 companies and government agencies, for $1.23 billion USD.
This transaction made NTT DATA the eighth largest software company in the
world. The following year, NTT DATA purchased Value Team, which gave it access
to the Latin American market while extending its coverage in Europe. Other
acquisitions throughout the years have included MISI Company, the Revere
Group, Vertex, AgileNet, Innogence, and most recently, Dell Services, for over
$3 billion.
Today, NTT DATA, which is part of the NTT Group, is headquartered in Tokyo,
has offices in over 50 nations around the world, and provides professional services in consulting, cloud, and business
process outsourcing. It is publicly traded on the Tokyo
Stock Exchange, has 118,000 employees, and is considered a top 10 IT
services provider.

Recent Activity
[return to top of this report]
Over the past couple of years, NTT DATA has landed several major contracts
with different agencies in the US government. The General Services
Administration awarded a spot on the $50 billion Alliant 2 Government-wide
Acquisition Contract for IT services in August 2018. This contract enables NTT
DATA to provide federal clients with digital, application, mobility, cloud,
infrastructure, and security solutions. In 2019, the company won a five-year,
$218 million contract with the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
Under this contract, NTT DATA will deliver maintenance support while overseeing
daily operations and will improve efficiencies of the USAID’s infrastructure and
operations. NTT DATA landed a $60 million, five-year contract with the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to provide IT service desk and
field service support. NTT DATA also was named a prime contractor for the US
Navy’s SeaPort Next Generation contract vehicle. This positioning gives the
company the opportunity to compete for a broad range of Navy services. Finally,
NTT DATA is a prime contractor for the US Army’s Information Technology
Enterprise Solutions – 3 Services contract vehicle.
In 2019, NTT DATA was named as one of the eight companies that was hacked by
China’s Ministry of State Security in a cyber espionage campaign known as Cloud
Hopper. At first, only Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and IBM were thought to have
been attacked, but Reuters determined that six other companies, including
NTT DATA, CSC, Fujitsu, and DXC Technology had also been compromised. It isn’t
known how much damage has been done by this hacking campaign but it appears that
Cloud Hopper intended to bolster Chinese economic interests. Former Australian
National Cyber Security Adviser Alistair MacGibbon said, "This was the
theft of industrial or commercial secrets for the purpose of advancing an
economy. The lifeblood of a company."1
Bob Pryor, NTT DATA’s chief operating officer, was promoted to CEO in July
2018, replacing John McCain, who transitioned to the role of chairman of the
board. Pryor joined NTT DATA in 2016 and had previously been the CEO at Fujitsu
Americas. Pryor’s new role will have him pursuing growth potential in cloud,
digital, and security technologies while also managing business operations and
taking a spot on the company’s board. McCain said in a press release, "As
COO, Bob played an essential role in setting this strong foundation, including
the successful integration of the former Dell Services, and he will do a great
job as CEO leading this company and our clients into the future."
NTT DATA acquired Dell Services in 2016. Dell Services was a provider of
solutions for vertical industries and offerings in infrastructure services,
cloud, application services, and business process outsourcing. John McCain, NTT
DATA’s CEO at the time, led the transaction and is responsible for overseeing the combined
businesses. The transaction cost NTT DATA about $3.05 billion.
