Japan’s Internet Access Surprisngly Unaffected by Quake

Computerworld is reporting that Japan’s Internet remained surprisingly intact following the recent magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami struck the country. According to Computerworld’s source,
Internet monitoring firm Renesys, the majority of Japanese Web sites remained available on March 13. This rebound follows a worrisome period after the quake when 100 of the country’s 6,000 network prefixes went offline, along with a 25 gigabits per second
drop in bandwidth usage. However, shortly after this initial scare the situation normalized with bandwidth usage taking only hours to reach its normal levels. Computerworld believes the reason for the lack of more severe disruptions was due to the fact
that all of the underwater data cables in the region survived the earthquake intact. If any had broken it would have created widespread and long-lasting difficulties for Web sites and Internet users.

Pew Finds Online Journalism Reaching Dominance

According to the most recent State of the Media Report from Pew Research, in the digital space, organizations that produce the news increasingly rely on
independent networks to sell their ads. They depend on aggregators (such as Google) and social networks (such as Facebook) to bring them a substantial portion of their audience. And now, as news consumption becomes more mobile, news
companies must follow the rules of device makers (such as Apple) and software developers (Google again) to deliver their content. According to the report, each new platform often requires a new software program, and the new players take a
share of the revenue and in many cases also control the audience data. Other findings from the study included: online news has passed print media, for the first time, as the most common location for readers to get
local news more than three times per week; a shift in print media employee cuts is now being countered by online media hires; every media sector except online is losing audience; and AM/FM radio may finally be falling victim to the decline experienced by
other traditional media delivery formats.

Japan’s Official Death Toll Passes 5,400 after Earthquake, Tsunami

Japanese government officials said the number of those who died or are unaccounted for in the wake of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11 has exceeded 16,000 –  6,548 people confirmed dead and 10,354 reported missing.
Another 380,000 people are in 2,200 shelters in eight prefectures, according to Kyodo News. The Japanese National Police Agency released the grim statistics on

Microsoft says the new app includes three major features: filtering news stories by automatically predicting news categories; providing social integration with Twitter; and recommending news stories based on the user’s votes.
