Dell Completes Purchase of Storage Firm Compellent

Dell completed its acquisition of Compellent Technologies, which provides virtualized storage technology with data management features such as tiering and thin
provisioning for business or cloud computing environments, for $800 million USD. The merger is Dell’s newest investment in expanding its enterprise storage portfolio, which also includes the EqualLogic and PowerVault brands. Compellent Fluid Data
technology combines a powerful data movement engine, intelligent software, and modular hardware, providing an architecture with block-level intelligence to automatically place data on the proper storage tier Compellent shareholders approved the
acquisition that same day at a special meeting.

Juniper Networks Acquires Brilliant Telecom Assets

Network solutions provider Juniper Networks announced it has acquired certain assets of Brilliant Telecommunications, including all of its intellectual property for approximately $4.5 million USD in cash. The
transaction closed on February 18, 2011. Juniper outbid Symmetricom in a last-minute deal to acquire Brilliant; Symmetricom had offered $3.5 million in an offer that included an additional $2.3 million in cash if
certain milestones were achieved within six months of closing. Symmetricom had even issued a press release announcing the acquisition. Brilliant Telecommunications makes packet-based network synchronization equipment and monitoring solutions.

KPMG Agrees to Acquire EquaTerra

KPMG signed an agreement to acquire the business of EquaTerra. The company plans to combine its own global oustourcing and advisory services with those of EquaTerra to expands its offerings. Going forward, KPMG says it
will use the acquired assets to focus on “organic and inorganic opportunities in select high-demand market sectors.” No terms for the acquisition were disclosed.

News Corp to Acquire Shine Group

News Corp reached an agreement in principal to acquired 100 percent of the Shine Group for GBP 415 million. Negotiations continue to reach the final terms of the proposed long-form stock purchase agreement.
However, the companies have already begun to seek regulatory approval for the transaction. The closing of the purchase is subject to approval by the audit committee and the full board of News Corporation, as well as receipt of an independent fairness
opinion, and Shine Group board approval.

OpenText Completes Acquisition of BPM Firm Metastorm

OpenText completed its acquisition of Business Process Management (BPM) firm Metastorm. The company says it will use the acquisition to further its Microsoft partner strategy, and to create new process improvement
solutions that combine content and process management capabilities. No financial terms for the transaction were disclosed.

SAS Acquires Assetlink, Plans Combined Marketing Management Platform

SAS acquired Assetlink, a provider of marketing resource management (MRM). SAS plans to combine its own customers intelligence offerings with Assetlink’s MRM solutions to create combined marketing management platform.
The company says the combined solution will support advanced analytics, marketing optimization, and data management. No financial terms for the transaction were disclosed.

Swisscom to Merge RFID Business with Vilant Systems Oy

Swisscom agreed to merge the RFID activities of its own Auto-ID Services with those of Vilant Systems Oy. The actual transaction will consist of Swisscom selling its majority stake in Auto-ID Services to the other
company, after which it will retain a minority stake in Vilant Systems Oy. The structure of Auto-ID Service will remain intact, and it will be renamed Vilant Systems AG. No financial terms for the transaction were disclosed.

Alcatel to Offer Training, Certification in Mexico

Alcatel-Lucent announced an agreement with Mexico’s Al Akhawayn University to offer a training and certification program for Alcatel technologies and products. Students will be able to develop applications to
run on smart desk phones, and have access to product prototypes, development frameworks, APIs, and documentation. Al Akhawayn will also participate in Alcatel’s Application Partner program.

Siemens IT Solutions and Services was named a SAP-certified cloud services provider. As a global outsourcing provider, it will now offer Cloud Hosting Services – in support of SAP

NEC Commercially Launches Touch-less Finger Sensor

NEC Japan announced the commercial launch of a device that can simultaneously collect fingerprint and finger-vein characteristics without physical contact: the HS100-10 Contact-less Hybrid Finger Scanner. It uses a
contact-less sensor and features a USB interface for connecting to a PC to secure the system. The HS100-10 is compatible with most access management software.

European Union Plans March Roundtable on Resilience

ENISA, the European Union’s (European Union) Network and Information Security Agency, has scheduled a workshop to involve public and private companies
in establishing a resilience partnership. The seminar, which will take place on March 16 and 17, will be held in Brussels.

FCC to Verizon: Details Needed on 911 System Failure

The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau has requested a full assessment from Verizon on connection failures of 10,000 wireless
emergency calls to 911 call centers in Maryland during a January snowstorm. The FCC also asked Verizon to identify remedies to help prevent similar occurrences in the future, and implement solutions to quickly restore reliable network operations when
there are problems.

FCC to Host Forum on Public Safety Mobile Broadband Framework

The US Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety Homeland Security Bureau’s (PSHSB) Emergency Response Interoperability Center (ERIC) will host a forum on March 4 to gather input on the technical framework for the nationwide public safety
mobile broadband network. The forum will be held at FCC headquarters in Washington, DC.

McAfee Report Reveals Sobering Results on Security Risks

Forty-one percent of organizations are not well aware of or protected against IT security risks, according to a newly released report from McAfee. McAfee also said that
of companies surveyed, 40% are not confident that they can accurately deploy security products. In addition, 75% of organizations said they would not pass a regulatory audit, and half the organizations studied admitted they had already failed such an
audit.

Feds Predict Major Spring Flooding in North Central US

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released an initial spring flood outlook for the US, and has determined that a large swath of the country is at risk of moderate to major flooding in the next
few months. The area, from northeastern Montana through western Wisconsin, and following the Mississippi River south to St. Louis is considered at high risk for flooding. NOAA will release a full national spring flood outlook report on March 17.

AT&T Wins Contract from Canadian Mining, Energy Company

Canada-based Hatch has selected AT&T to provide its global communications services under a three-year agreement. AT&T will provide a portfolio of networking, hosting, teleconferencing,
and voice services. Hatch supplies engineering, project and construction management services, process and business consulting, and operational services to the mining, metallurgical, energy and infrastructure industries.

Verizon Wireless Taps Tektronix’ Iris to Monitor LTE Network Services

Verizon Wireless announced it has selected Tektronix Communications‘ Iris suite of solutions to support the monitoring of Verizon Wireless’

Intel Unveils Thunderbolt High-Speed Data Transfer Technology

Intel formally unveiled its new Thunderbolt data transfer technology, formerly known as LightPeak. The new data transfer and high-definition PC connection runs at 10 gigabits per second and “can transfer a full-length
HD movie in less than 30 seconds,” Intel said. Thunderbolt technology supports both data and display on a single cable. Powered by an Intel controller chip, Thunderbolt uses a small connector suitable for mobile devices such as Apple’s updated lineup of
MacBook Pros, also announced this week. The 10Gbps speed is faster than recently-introduced alternatives like USB 3.0. Intel sees Thunderbolt replacing the multiple specialty ports on laptops and desktop machines with one universal port for everything. In
a press release, Intel said several companies beyond Apple have already announced Thunderbolt
technology-based products, and that it “working with the industry” on a range of Thunderbolt technology-enabled products including computers, displays, storage devices, audio/video devices, cameras, and docking stations.

Toshiba Develops Flip-Flop to Cut Mobile Power Use

Toshiba Japan developed a new “flip-flop” circuit that uses 40 nanometer CMOS process technology to cut the power consumption in mobile equipment. Measured data verifies that the power dissipation of the new
flip-flop is up to 77% less than that of a typical conventional flip-flop, and that it achieves a 24 percent reduction in total power consumption when applied to a WLAN chip. Essentially, a flip-flop is a circuit that temporarily stores one bit of data
during arithmetic processing by a digital system-on-a-chip, incorporated in mobile equipment and other digital equipment.

AWS Announces Support for Hosting Static Web Sites for Amazon S3

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced changes to its Amazon S3 service which will allow customers to host entire static Web sites for the first time. The service did not previously support the hosting of a standard
static Web site, due to a lack of support for root and custom error documents. Now that both of these items are support, the company says that the S3 service can be used as a fully functional Web host for static Web sites. More information about the
changes, and how to use S3 to host a site, is available from the Amazon S3 Developer’s Guide.

Capgemini Certified as SAP Global Provider of Cloud Services

Capgemini announced that it has been certified as a provider of both SAP cloud and hosting services. The certification comes after extensive testing to assure the Capgemini’s products met with SAP’s standards for
physical infrastructure, policies, procedures, as well as validating the SAP technical competency of staff. As a result of its approval Capgemini plans to begin offering both private and public cloud products using SAP technology in the near future.

Siemens, Microsoft Developing Hybrid Cloud Solutions

Siemens IT Solutions and Services is working with Microsoft to jointly develop and market new hybrid cloud solutions – a mix of public cloud applications and private cloud
data center services – for the upcoming Office 365 public cloud package. Siemens plans to extend Microsoft applications for communication and online collaboration, providing an IT infrastructure based on a private cloud. These will be available via its
data centers in Germany. It will also integrate these services into existing customer communication infrastructure. Office 365 – part of Microsoft’s and Siemens’ Hybrid Cloud Computing initiative – is currently in a closed beta phase.

Alcatel, Altair Complete TD-LTE Interoperability Testing

Alcatel-Lucent and Altair Semiconductor announced their time division – longterm evolution (TD-LTE) technology has successfully completed interoperability testing,
and that they will take part in several TD-LTE field trials in India and China over the next few weeks. The TD-LTE solution combines Altair’s 4G LTE chipsets and Alcatel’s LTE infrastructure. A 4G wireless standard, TD-LTE was designed to operate in
unpaired spectrum. It is quickly emerging as the de-facto standard for the time division duplex spectrum.

Alcatel-Lucent, Chunghwa Launching GPON Network in Taiwan

Alcatel-Lucent and telecommunications provider Chunghwa Telecom are engaging in a fiber optic network project to build a GB passive optical network (GPON) in
Taiwan. The fiber based infrastructure will allow it to provide triple-play services to residential and business customers. Commercial operation of the initial phase of Chunghwa’s GPON network will commence in the third quarter. Alcatel is widely regarded
as a leader in GPON deployment, having been involved in more than 100 fiber to the home projects worldwide.

Colliers Selects AT&T to Link Its Operations Worldwide

AT&T said it has been selected by commercial real estate services company Colliers International to implement a unified global network for Colliers, and its partners and affiliates. Under terms of the 4-year agreement,
AT&T is providing voice, data, consulting and hosting services to link 129 Colliers offices located in 13 countries throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Huawei Demonstrates Intelligent Optical Distribution Network

Huawei Technologies demonstrated its intelligent optical distribution network. It uses eID and field engineering assistant software – iField – to achieve automatic identification and management of fiber connections,
intelligent fiber connection operations, and intelligent management for optical splitters. Operators can use it to identify the target optical fiber and operate it for fiber-to-the-home rollouts.

Level 3 Extends Network to AtlantaNAP Data Center

Level 3 said it has extended its network infrastructure in Georgia with the construction of a full network point of presence (PoP) and fiber node at Global Net Access’ (GNAX)
AtlantaNAP Data Center, the main healthcare IT hub in the US state of Georgia. The data center hosts a range of customers, including Georgia’s two largest hospital systems. The new PoP means Level 3 can provide GNAX data center customers with direct access
to the more than 190 markets served by Level 3’s network.

Nokia Siemens, Juniper JV Announces Carrier Transport Technology

The Carrier Ethernet Solutions venture between Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper Networks announced Carrier Ethernet Transport (CET) 2.0. CET helps balance a
network’s capacity. It includes Nokia Siemens Ethernet access switches and ASPEN network management system. It is designed for operators that offer business and residential services as well as fiber mobile backhaul.

Nomad to Deploy Expanded Amtrak Wi-Fi Service

Nomad Digital has been selected by Amtrak as its preferred technology partner for the deployment of AmtrakConnect Wi-Fi service. Amtrak has already introduced Nomad’s
high-speed Wi-Fi service on Acela Express trains between Boston and Washington, DC and on Amtrak Cascades trains in the Pacific Northwest. It now plans to install AmtrakConnect on Northeast Corridor services and on more West Coast trains by the end of this
year. With the recent selection of Nomad Digital as its provider for nationwide deployment of Wi-Fi service, Amtrak personnel at the Ivy City Maintenance Facility in Washington, DC and the Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia, PA will begin installing Wi-Fi
equipment in more than 450 Amfleet railcars. The new services will be deployed using Nomad’s technology, which is capable of aggregating multiple wide-area networks including 3G cellular and 4G technologies into a single train-to-shore link to maximize
the available bandwidth. Nomad Digital, based in the UK, provides end-to-end wireless network solutions for transportation fleets. Amtrak is the US National Railroad Passenger Corporation.

Verizon Ready to Go with EIG Cable

Verizon Communications announced that its enterprise customers can begin using the newly-activated Europe India Gateway cable. The $700 million
high-capacity fiber-optic submarine cable will provide multinational customers with additional network diversity and capacity, Verizon said. Verizon is a member with 16 other companies of the EIG (Europe India Gateway) Consortium, which formally accepted
delivery of more than 11,300 kilometers (7,021 miles) of the total 15,000 km (9,320 miles) EIG cable system. The accepted cable system routes are: London to Bude, U.K.; Bude to Portugal to Gibraltar to Monaco to Libya; Monaco to Marseille, France; and
Saudi Arabia to Djibouti to Oman to United Arab Emirates to India. The group also accepted 11 of 13 cable landing stations. The only remaining segment to be completed for the EIG is in Egypt, where there are two landing sites.

ZTE Launches zVOA Solution for Adding New Content to Existing Networks

ZTE launched its zVOA (ZTE Voice & Video over Any-access) solution. The new offering is designed to let telecom operators create a unified control network for voice, video and multimedia services on top of an
existing mobile or fixed access network infrastructure. ZTE says zVOA can be used to deploy VoLTE, VOBB, and multimedia networks across existing LTE, Wi-Fi, HSPA+, and other popular formats. Installation of the new solution consists of an iCX (intelligent
Controller eXtensive), which integrates mobile and fixed softswitches; and an iMG (integrative Media Gateway), which includes media functions such as integrated voice, video, and more.

Avaya to Help Extend Moscow Bank Video Services

Avaya will provide a video enabled contact center technology for Russia’s Bank of Moscow, to underpin its new Digital Office branch format. The technology will allow it to offer new banking services via 24×7 video
consultation, including account access, money transfers, and payments. Video consultations will be logged and managed via the Avaya Contact Centre.

Cisco Unveils TelePresence Video Creation, Streaming

Cisco Systems introduced new products for creating and streaming video projects, including the new TelePresence Control Server 5.0. This end-to-end video recording and streaming solution allows the user to record a
meeting in premium resolution – 1080p at 30 frames/s or 720p at 60 frames/s – then immediately review, play back, and share that recording with others through integration with Cisco Show and Share. It also offers integration with Cisco Pulse analytics,
technology for conducting video searches. Cisco also rolled out new Unified IP phones with built-in cameras for video calling.

Internet2 Launches New Interoperable Telepresence Bridging Service

Internet2 launched a new service to allow for interoperable telepresence bridging. The new offering was made possible by a recent investment in Cisco TelePresence Server
infrastructure. The service uses the Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP) standard to allow customers on Cisco TelePresence solutions to interoperate with standards based SIP and H.323 videoconferencing systems. The service will also support
multiprotocol dialing and reachability.

HP Upgrades Paycor Data Center with Converged Infrastructure

Hewlett-Packard (HP) provided the converged infrastructure to help Paycor – a payroll processing services provider – upgrade its data center to better address converged infrastructure demands. The deployment includes
eight socket HP ProLiant servers. Paycor supports more than 19,000 corporate clients; it executes 1.7 million transactions and processes 130,000 paychecks.

Juniper Unveils Qfabric Data Center Fabric, Publishes Paper

Juniper Networks unveiled Qfabric, a data center fabric based on research from its Project Stratus multi-year data center network research and development initiative. QFabric provides exponential improvements in
data center speed, scale, and efficiency by removing legacy barriers. In addition, Juniper founder and CTO Pradeep Sindhu published a whitepaper – “The Distinguishing
Characteristics of a Qfabric”] – defining the characteristics of a true data center fabric, in conjunction with the release.

Asus Ships Systems with Revamped Intel Sandy Bridge

Asus International began shipping its previously announced desktop and laptop releases powered by Intel’s Sandy Bridge technology, in line with the revised design released by Intel. Asus asks that customers who already
own potentially affected models visit its Sandy Bridge support site to verify if a system is affected and follow the online swap procedure for a replacement. In January,
Intel reported a flaw with the new next-generation chipset related to how it communicates with SATA devices such as a hard disk or optical drives.

Google Releases SDK for Android 3.0 “Honeycomb”

Google released the full Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” software developer’s kit (SDK) to the public. The updated tools include support for the latest, tablet-specific, iteration of the mobile operating system. Improvements
to this edition of the SDK include a new palette with rendering previews, more accurate layout rendering, selection-sensitive action bars, zoom improvements, and Improved support for layouts and gesture overlays. The SDK and various other
programming tools are available for download from the Android developers site.

Lockheed Martin’s Trusted Manager Solution Added to GSA’s Schedule

Lockheed Martin revealed that its secure sharing solution, Trusted Manager, has been added to the US General Service Administration’s schedule of products and services approved for use by government
employees. The solution supports the transfer of data files, streaming data, and imagery products between computer systems on two or more different security domains.

Axis Communications Releases 2010 Year-End Financials

Recently, Axis Communications reported its year-end financial results for 2010. Net sales for the year were 2.93 billion SEK ($457 million USD) while profit after tax was 300 million ($469,000).

Clearwire Loss Widens in Q4; Revenue Up

WiMax broadband provider Clearwire reported a fourth-quarter 2010 net loss of US$128 million, compared with a loss of $98.7 million in the prior year. Excluding the effect of an equity investment, the company lost
53 cents a share. Revenue rose to $180.7 million. The company said it is working to raise money and cut costs to continue expanding its network across the US. Clearwire said it has received offers for its excess spectrum from multiple parties and is
holding discussions with the interested parties. “Our strong preference is to secure additional strategic equity investments, and we continue to hold discussions with interested parties,” Chief Executive Officer Bill Morrow said.

DIRECTV Posts Impressive Profit Growth in Q4, 2010 Financials

DIRECTV released its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ending December 31, 2010. For the quarter, the company’s revenue totaled $6.6 billion, up from $5.9 billion during the same quarter in
2009. Net income was $613 million, or $0.74 per share, compared to a net loss of $32 million, or $0.03 per share, suffered in the last quarter of 2009. The year brought in a total revenue of $24.1 billion, up from $21.5 billion for 2009. Net income jumped
to $2.19 billion, or $2.30 per share, after coming in at $942 million, or $0.95 per share last year. The company’s US division added 663,000 net new subscribers during the year, and maintained a churn rate of 1.53%. However, its Latin American business was
the year’s standout performer, adding 1.2 million net new subscribers.

DISH Network Shows Increased Revenue, Impressive Profit Growth in 2010

DISH Network released its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ending December 31, 2010. For the quarter, the company’s revenue was $3.21 billion, an 8.2% increase over the $2.96 billion
reported for the same quarter in 2009. Q4 net income was $252 million, or $0.56 per share, compared to $179 million, or $0.40 per share reported in the same quarter of 2009. For the year, the company reported a total revenue of $12.64 billion, up 8.4% from
$11.6 billion in 2009. Year-end net income was $985 million, or $2.20 per share, up from the $636 million, or $1.42 per share reported for 2009. DISH Network lost approximately 156,000 net subscribers during the fourth quarter, but managed to gain 33,000
net subscribers over the course of the year.

Frontier Profit, Revenue Up on Land Line Acquisitions

Frontier Communications, which provides service in mostly rural communities in 27 states, said it earned $46 million, or 5 cents per share, in the October-to-December 2010 period. That was up from $4.4
million, or 1 cent per share, in the 2009 Q4 period. Revenue more than doubled to $1.36 billion from $521 million a year earlier, due to Frontier’s acquisition of Verizon Communications’ land lines in 14 states. Excluding the $857.9 million in revenue
generated by those lines, the company’s revenue would have declined by about $20 million in the latest quarter due to a drop in local and long distance services revenue and switched access revenue. That shortfall was partly offset by an increase of $9.4
million in data and Internet services revenue. Frontier had 5.7 million business and residential phone lines at the end of 2010, up from 2.1 million the year before. The company is based in Stamford, CT.

Frontier Board Declares Quarterly Dividend

Telecommunications provider Frontier Communications, which serves rural customers in the US, announced that its Board of Directors has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend payment of $0.1875 per share
of common stock, payable on March 31, 2011 to holders of record of common stock at the close of business on March 9, 2011.

Gilat Revenue Up in Q4; Profit Down

Gilat Satellite Networks said its revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 were US $66.1 million, compared to $56.6 million for the same period in 2009. Net loss for the fourth quarter of 2010 was $4.9 million, or
$0.12 per diluted share, compared to a net income of $0.3 million or $0.01 per diluted share in the fourth quarter of 2009. Revenues for the twelve month period ended December 31, 2010 were $233.0 million, compared to $228.1 million in the comparable
period of 2009. Net income for the twelve month period ended December 31, 2010 was $30.6 million or $0.73 per diluted share, compared to a net income of $1.9 million or $0.04 per diluted share, in the same period of 2009. In 2010, Gilat completed the
acquisitions of RaySat Antenna Systems and Wavestream. Amiram Levinberg, Gilat’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board said: “We have set our financial management objectives for 2011 to increase our annual revenue to more than $330
million.”

Global Crossing Narrows Loss in Fourth Quarter 2010

Global Crossing reported a fourth quarter 2010 net loss of $1 million USD, or 2 cents a share, compared to a loss of $38 million or 63 cents a share for the same period in 2009. Fourth quarter revenues of
$683 million were up 5 percent, from $651 million. Global Crossing’s full year loss of $176 million, or $2.91 a share, compares to a loss of $145 million or $2.45 a share in 2009. Revenues for the full year 2010 of $2.6 billion were up 3 percent from $2.5
billion. Global Crossing is based in Florham Park, NJ.

HP Posts Modest Growth Despite Sluggish PCs, Services

Top PC maker Hewlett-Packard (HP) reported that revenues were up only four percent for its fiscal first quarter ended January 31st, dragged down by weakness in its PC and services divisions. Revenues hit $32.3 billion
USD, up from the prior year’s first quarter revenues of $31.2 billion but short of analyst projects of $32.96 billion. Profits were $2.6 billion, or $1.17 per share, up 16 percent from the prior year’s first quarter profits of $2.25 billion, or $0.93 per
share. First quarter revenue in the Americas rose 6% year-over-year to $14.4 billion, while revenue in Europe, the Middle East and Africa remained flat with last year at $12.1 billion and Asia Pacific revenue grew 7% to
$5.8 billion.First quarter revenue from the company’s international business constituted 65% of the total revenue. Revenue from the so-called emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China increased 11% over the prior year period and accounted for
11% of total revenue. First quarter revenue from HP’s Personal Systems Group fell 1% year-over-year to $10.4 billion. Notebook revenue for the quarter fell 5%, while Desktop revenue increased 1%. HP continues to be the world’s largest PC maker.

KPN Releases 2010 Annual Report

KPN released its 2010 Annual Report, including its financial results for the year. In 2010, the company’s total revenue was EUR 13.3
billion, down slightly from EUR 13.5 billion, reported in 2009. Net profits for 2010 were EUR 1.7 billion, down from EUR 2.1 billion, reported in 2009. This dropped earnings per share to EUR 1.15 for the year, down from the EUR 1.33 reported for 2009.

LightSquared Announces Additional Financing

LightSquared, a wholesale-only integrated wireless broadband and satellite network, announced it has closed on $586 million of debt, in a fund-raising round led by UBS AG and JP Morgan. LightSquared said it
will use the proceeds for general corporate purposes, which include constructing its 4G LTE wholesale network across the US. Over the last seven months, LightSquared has raised more than $2 billion in debt and equity.

MetroPCS Profit Down in Q4; Revenue Up

No-contract wireless provider MetroPCS said its fourth quarter 2010 net income declined, hurt by a debt extinguishment loss, but its revenue improved. The Dallas-based company earned $13.6 million USD, or 4 cents
per share, down from $33.1 million, or 9 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Excluding the debt charges and a gain related to an airwave license exchange, MetroPCS earned 20 cents per share in the fourth quarter. Revenue jumped 15 percent
to $1.07 billion from $930 million. The company added 297,726 subscribers during the quarter and ended the year with 8.15 million subscribers, making it the fifth-largest cell phone company after the Big Four national carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless,
Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile USA.

Motorola Mobility Invests in Digital Rights Management Company

Motorola Mobility Ventures, the venture capital arm of Motorola Mobility, announced a strategic investment in Catch Media, which provides a licensed digital rights locker platform called Play Anywhere. Play
Anywhere gives retailers, carriers, and consumer electronics vendors the ability to offer customers legal access to their digital content from disparate devices – inside and outside the home. The amount of the investment was not released.

NEC to Sell 19,000+ Shares in Anritsu

NEC Japan reported it would begin selling more than 19,000 shares of Anritsu that were contributed to the NEC employee retirement benefit trust. Anritsu will no longer be listed
as an NEC affiliate. Voting rights for NEC and its subsidiaries in Anritsu will be 6.9 percent.

Rogers to Repurchase 1.4 Million Shares of Stock

Rogers agreed to purchase, for the purpose of cancellation, 1.4 million shares of its outstanding Class B Non-Voting stock. This represents approximately 0.32% of the Class B shares outstanding as of January 31, 2011.
The aggregate purchase price for the shares will be about $44.9 million.

Trend Micro Reports on 2010 Year-End Financials

Trend Micro announced net sales of 24.2 billion yen ($292 million USD) for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2010, which ended on December 31. The company posted a net income of 3.2 billion yen ($38 million) for the
quarter. For 2010, Trend Micro reported net sales of 95.4 billion yen ($1.09 billion), and a net income of 12.7 billion yen ($144 million).

Unisys Holds Public Sale of 2.25 Million Mandatory Convertible Shares

Unisys announced a public offering of 2,250,000 shares of preferred stock. If this amount should sell out, the company is also authorizing underwriters to offer an additional 337,500 shares of mandatory convertible
preferred stock. The shares will be sold for $100 per share, and will be mandatorily convertible into shares of Unisys common stock on March 1, 2014. The company plans to use the proceeds from this sale towards a payment of $86.3 million towards its 14
1/4% Senior Secured Notes, due in 2015.

Avaya Selected as Prime Services Contractor by IRS

Avaya Government Solutions was one of several companies named a prime contractor by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS recently completed its longterm IT services related suite of indefinite delivery,
indefinitely quantity contracts, called TIPSS-4ITS. Avaya will provide support, including services concerning local microcomputer applications, large-scale integrated legacy systems, and newly developed systems, as well as security services and program
management. The contracts – serving as the primary procurement vehicles for technology related services within the IRS and other Treasury bureaus – have a 10 year period of performance (one base year plus nine one-year options).

SAIC Receives $62 Million IT Contract Extension from NASA

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) received a contract extension from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for its Unified NASA Information Technology Services (UNITeS) agreement.
The expanded agreement calls on the company to continue to provide the space agency with a wide range of IT services, including network management, audio-visual services, telecommunications, IT procurement, security, and computing and mainframe support.
The extension has an eight-month base period, and several options which would bring the total value up to more than $62 million.

Allscripts Launches App Store, Referral Network

Allscripts announced a pair of new initiatives: the new Application Store & Exchange (ASX) and the Allscripts Referral Network. The ASX is a software delivery platform with the goal of easing the distribution
process to all of the company’s clients. The platform allows designers to create, add, and connect to third-party apps. Allscripts says the new platform will result in lower costs for designers and distributors. The company’s other announcement, the Allscripts Referral network, is a healthcare communications solution designed to handle all patient referrals from physicians and post-acute care providers. The extra
service will be provided free of charge to all existing subscribers to Allscripts Electronic Health Record(EHR), as well as users of Allscripts ePrescribe. Both new offerings are available now.

AT&T Expands Healthcare Initiatives; Enhances ForHealth Services

AT&T announced two new patient care technology pilot projects, and new enhancements to the services delivered by AT&T ForHealth, its healthcare practice area. The company also said it has been accredited to provide
specialized information security consulting services to help their healthcare customers streamline security and compliance processes. Specifically, AT&T announced three enhancements to the AT&T Healthcare Community Online, its cloud-based health
information exchange solution. These include: a mobility interface that now allows smartphones to access relevant patient information; access to 58 pre-integrated applications; and software that analyzes patient information and brings evidence-based
medicine to providers at the point-of-care. AT&T will conduct pilot programs using its healthcare technology with St. Joseph Health System and Health Care Service Corporation, which operates Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma,
and Texas.

Microsoft announced a new collaboration with Royal Phillips Electronics with the goal of streamlining the workflow of radiologists. This alliance, which builds upon existing collaborations, will attempt to connect
Microsoft’s Amalga data aggregation platform with Philips’ iSite PACS, a picture archiving and communication system. The two companies say this will allow radiologists to view admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) data, lab data, pathology reports and

SAP launched its new SAP Collaborative E-Care Management application. The new product is designed to be a comprehensive system for monitoring patient heath and treatments. The E-Care Management application incorporates

Yahoo Tops January 2011 comScore Media Metrix Top 50

comScore released its Media Metrix Top 50 Web
Properties
list for January 2011. Yahoo was the big winner of the month, narrowly edging out Google with 178.8 million unique visitors to the second place company’s 178.5 million.
Microsoft‘s sites came in third with 176.7 million unique visitors, while Facebook was fourth with 153 million visitors, and AOL was fifth at 110.9 million visitors. Also of
note in January’s numbers were large jumps by Tribune Interactive, rising 9 positions to reach number 32, and LinkedIn, climbing 11 positions to reach number 36.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) published the proposed final report of the Policy Development
Process (PDP) Work Team (WT) on potential GNSO improvements. Apple Announces MacBook Systems with ThunderBolt, HD Camera

Apple Rumored to Release Info on iPad 2 Next Week

Apple is expected to release information about its new iPad 2 device on Wednesday, March 2nd at an event in San Francisco, according to a recent report published by the Wall Street Journal’s AllThingsD blog, citing multiple sources. The iPad 2 is expected to be thinner than its predecessor,
with an improved display, a front-facing camera, and Facetime video chat support. It is believed Apple will begin selling an updated version of the tablet about a year after the original, extremely successful device went on sale last April. More than 15
million iPads have been sold, according to Apple. In the future, Apple expects to face increasing competition from competing tablets, most powered by the Honeycomb version of Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Fujitsu Previews New Business Slate PC Product

Fujitsu Japan is preparing to release the STYLISTIC Q550, a business slate PC for high-security mobile enterprise computing environments. It is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing IT infrastructures, and
features a 10-inch anti-glare display, a “full work day” battery life, and multi-touch interface with stylus pen. It can automatically recognize when a user is working with a pen, and allows them to rest their hand on the screen while writing. Handwriting
recognition is also available. Fujitsu will position the Q550 for enterprise system environments and other business scenarios, including rapidly accelerating communications environments and cloud computing. It will be available in April.

HP Introduces Laptops, Including Models with 32-Hr Battery

Hewlett-Packard (HP) introduced new ProBook and EliteBook laptops, the first to feature its new FORGE design framework. FORGE is highlighted by new aluminum-alloy hinges, cast titanium-alloy display latches, and a
DisplaySafe frame. The new laptops weigh about 4-6 pounds and measure 13-16 inches. In particular, the EliteBook includes three-cell, six-cell, or nine-cell options to provide up to 32 hours of battery life per charge. The new, bolstered systems will be
available beginning March 15th.

Lenovo announced new T, L, and W series ThinkPad laptops with new features for video and voice calling, power and performance management, and “all day” battery life. The ultra-thin systems weigh less than four pounds
and offer 10-30 hours of extended battery life per charge, depending on the model. The releases range in price from $719-$1,329 USD.

T-Mobile USA to Launch LG’s G-Slate Tablet

T-Mobile USA and LG Mobile Phones unveiled their Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)-powered tablet, the T-Mobile G-Slate. The G-Slate boasts a high-definition 8.9-inch, 3D-capable
multi-touch display and can record 3D and full HD video. It has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor with dual-core CPU and full Adobe Flash Player support. The new tablet is expected to be available this Spring. Pricing was not released.

Verizon to Sell Xoom Tablet for $599 with Contract

Verizon Wireless and Motorola Mobility announced that the new Motorola XOOM tablet is available for purchase from Verizon Wireless for $599.99 with a new
two-year customer agreement or $799.99 without a contract. Wireless 3G data service for the Motorola XOOM will begin at $20 monthly access for 1GB of data. The first device to run Google’s new Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating system, the Motorola XOOM
will be upgradeable to 4G LTE service at no additional charge in the second quarter of 2011, Verizon said. The tablet – which was made available for ordering February 24th, is built around a 1GHz dual-core processor and 10.1-inch widescreen HD display.
It has a front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chats and a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that captures video in 720p HD. It also supports tabbed browsing and the Adobe Flash Player, which will be available “soon” as a free download, the carrier
said.

Court Rules for Huawei in Protection of Intellectual Property Case

The District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a preliminary injunction in favor of Huawei that prevents Motorola from transferring Huawei’s confidential
information to Nokia Siemens Networks. The order also requires Motorola to hire a qualified third party to ensure Huawei’s confidential information is securely removed, and allows Huawei to audit NSN’s
record of service it performs on Motorola-branded system that include Huawei products. In a press release, Huawei said it was pleased the ruling, and hopes Motorola “will now turn its focus to ensuring that Huawei’s intellectual property rights are well
protected.”

Kaspersky’s January Report Finds India Top Spam Producer

In Kaspersky Lab‘s January spam report, messages spamming pharmaceutical products were the most popular category. India,
Russia, and Italy maintained the first three positions in the top 20 list of spam producing countries during these two months, while the US shifted downward to number 14 in January. The amount of spam emanating from India stood at 9%. Russia came in second
having distributed 8.2% of spam with 5% originating in Italy.

Kaspersky Predicts Threats for Security Landscape

Kaspersky Lab has presented its forecast for the threat landscape for 2011-2020, based on analysis of the main changes and issues in the sphere of IT security over the past decade. Kaspersky predicts that the
defining feature over the next 10 years will be the end of Windows’ domination of user operating systems, which will affect the process of threat creation. In addition, by 2020, Kaspersky expects attacks on individual users will become much more complex
because the emerging trend of making payments electronically and using online banking will continue, but biometric user identification and payment protection systems will become the norm.

Kaspersky Reports on Malware Targeting Polish Customers of ING Bank

A Polish security expert has discovered that the Zeus Trojan is targeting customers of ING Bank in Poland, according to Kaspersky Lab. Piotr Konieczny, the consultant, revealed in a blog post on Monday that the
samples used in this attack run on a number of platforms: Trojan-Spy.Win32.Zbot.bbmf for Windows, Trojan-Spy.SymbOS.Zbot.b for Symbian and Trojan-Spy.WinCE.Zbot.a for Windows Mobile.

Sophos spotted a phishing scam that is targeting PayPal users by disguising itself as an urgent security message from the e-commerce company. The message tricks users into
clicking to a Web page that looks like PayPal’s, and then instructs the victims to turn over sensitive information like credit card details.

Malware Hits Wallets and Financial Accounts in New Way

Trusteer is warning about a new Trojan, dubbed “OddJob,” that keeps online banking sessions open when users think that they have logged off. The result is that hackers can extract money fraudulently from
unsuspecting victims. Trusteer has reported its findings to financial institutions. It says the Trojan is being used by Eastern European hackers to exploit customers in the US, Poland, and Denmark.

DIRECTV Previews its iPad APP

DIRECTV announced its upcoming DIRECTV iPad App. The applications serves as a remote control for the satellite television provider’s set top boxes. The app will be able to change channels, set DVR recordings, show
programming info, and display sports scores. It also features a customizable home screen, which the user can populate with information on his or her favorite channels, movies, and shows. No release date has been set for the application’s launch.

Northrop Grumman Releases App for Veterans Electronic Health Records

Northrop Grumman released a mobile application designed to give veterans access to their personal medical records via their mobile devices. The application, dubbed VA-214, was made to compliment the VA
MyHealtheVet service provided by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The app allows its users to view their medical records, as well as their medications and prescriptions from an iOS or Android-based device. The VA-214 application is available from the
Android Marketplace, the Apple App Store, or from Northrop Grumman’s own App download page.

Apple Releases Developer Preview of Mac OS X Lion

Apple released a developer preview of Mac OS X “Lion,” an eighth release of its operating system with features from iPad to Mac systems. Among its dozens of features, Lion offers Mission Control software, for viewing
a Mac system in its entirety, full-screen apps that use the entire Mac display, and multi-touch functionality. A preview is available for Mac Developer Program members, through the Mac App Store. A final
version will ship to customers this summer.

Microsoft Releases Windows 7/ Windows Server 2008 SP 1

Microsoft released its first service pack for the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems. Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not include any major new features. The company says the update consists primarily
of back end performance enhancements and fixes, largely derived from incremental updates released for the both operating systems since their launch. Users can download the update from the Microsoft Download Center, or via the Windows Update function in either OS.

Novell launches SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications

Novell launched the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications. Novell says this is the first version of Linux to support the full range of SAP
applications, allowing customers to run the entire library on a SAP-certified and validated Linux platform. Features of the specialized Linux operating system include faster installation of SAP software, a built-in business community via the SUSE Linux
Enterprise High Availability Extension, and lower cost of operations when compared to using multiple operating systems.

NCR launched the NCR SelfServ 16, a compact ATM kiosk. The new automated teller measures 0.28 square-meters and is designed for placement in areas such as grocery stores, business complexes, and other non-banking

NIST Releases Publications on Security

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released the National Checklist Program for IT Products: Guidelines for Checklist Users and Developers, which is identified as SP800-70 Revision 2. This paper describes security configuration checklists and their benefits, and it explains how to use the NIST National Checklist Program (NCP) to find
and retrieve checklists. NIST also released Status Report on the Second Round of the SHA-3 Cryptographic Hash Algorithm Competition, which is identified as IR 7764.

Boeing Creates Commercial Satellite Services Business

Boeing established Boeing Commercial Satellite Services, a new division with the goal of marketing commercial satellite telecommunications services to the US government and other interests. The company says the new
business will focus on offering hosted payloads, a method of placing technology on a satellite owned by another organization. Boeing says this business model will allow it to offer more affordable prices, and to launch new satellite orders in as little as
three years. The Boeing Commercial Satellite Services division will be located in El Segundo, and is considered part of the Boeing Space & Intelligence Systems group.

Bing Expands Liked Results to Include all URL Results in the US

Bing announced an expansion of its Liked Results feature. The
feature will now be able to annotate any URL results returned by a query performed for any search term. Results that have been "liked" by users’ Facebook friends will appear with a text note and a
miniature profile picture of the friend who “Liked” it. The new feature is now live on Bing.com for US users only at this point.

Google Launches “Recipe View” Cooking Recipe Search

Google launched its new Recipe View search service. The new method of search presents users exclusively with cooking recipes. It then allows the searcher to narrow
down their results by factors such as ratings, ingredients, and whether the recipe includes photos. The Recipe View search also supports numerous search terms including specific dishes, ingredients, and chefs. Recipe view is available now in the US and
Japan, with other countries expected to follow shortly.

Google Retires Real Estate Search

Google quietly retired its real estate search late last month. The company said the decision was the result of a
combination of factors including low usage, the existence of impressive competing search tools, and the upcoming retirement the Google Base API-which powered the real estate search. Google says that it will continue to explore other options to offer
similar functionality. However, in the meantime, it suggests that users transition to other real estate listing providers that generate map listings via its Google Maps API.

Flaw in CA’s Internet Security Suite

A security advisory for CA‘s Internet Security Suite (IIS) 2010 and Host-Based Intrusion Prevention
System has been issued due to a critical vulnerability in the XMLSecDB ActiveX control. CA plans to release fixes for this problem in IIS 2010 shortly but in the meantime directs users to set the kill-bit switch for the affected ActiveX control. IPS users

Study Finds Cellphone Use Has Effect on Brain Activity

Researchers from the US National Institutes of Health found that less than an hour of cellphone use can speed up brain activity in the area closest to the phone antenna. While the finding raises new questions about the
health effects of low levels of radiation emitted from cellphones, the researchers urged caution in interpreting the findings because it is not known whether the changes, which were seen in brain scans, have any “clinical significance.” Specifically, the
study concluded that in healthy participants and compared with no exposure, 50-minute cell phone exposure was associated with increased brain glucose metabolism in the region closest to the
antenna.

Microsoft Pulls Windows Phone 7 Patch

Microsoft has pulled the Windows Phone 7 update it released earlier this week for the Samsung Omnia 7 after users of the new smartphone found that, in some cases, the update was “bricking” (shutting off and
disabling) Samsung Omnia 7 phones. Microsoft said it has identified “a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of phones.” It plans to reissue the patch.

Yahoo to Shut Down MyBlogLog Service on May 24

Yahoo sent an email to MyBlogLog users warning of the service’s impending shutdown, CNet reports. Yahoo acquired the start-up in 2007 for about $10 million. According to CNet the
announcement was expected after a corporate presentation slide showing yahoo products likely to be sold or shut down was leaked online by MyBlogLog’s founder, Eric Marcoullier. The service offered blog owners a type of widget that was designed to show
which MyBlogLog members had read their site. A service which, CNet notes, bears a resemblance to Facebook‘s “Like” button. The company says the MyBlogLog will officially be discontinued as of May 24. Any user with a
paid subscription extending past that date will be eligible for a refund.

Amazon Adds Free Instant Movie Streaming for Amazon Prime Members

Amazon added a new benefit for subscribers to its Amazon Prime shipping service: free streaming from a library holding more than 5,000 movies and television
shows
. Amazon Prime members can stream the free videos to Macs, PCs, and compatible Internet connected televsisions. The company said this extra service is only available to
members who maintain a standard paid Prime subscription, and is not included in the Amazon Student and Amazon Mom programs that provide discounted shipping rates.
