Citrix Closes Acquisition of Netviewer

Citrix Closed its acquisition of Netviewer. The acquired company will become part of Citrix Online with the goal of enhancing the division’s global expansion and its market position in Europe. As part of the
integration of Netviewer, Robert Gratzl has been appointed vice president and general manager for Citrix Online in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

HP to Purchase Real-Time Analytics Firm Vertica

Hewlett-Packard (HP) signed an agreement to acquire Vertica, a privately-held firm that offers a real time analytics platform. HP believes the acquisition will extend its capabilities for information optimization, adding
business analytics for complex sets of data in physical, virtual, and cloud environments. Vertica’s platform can rapidly analyze massive amounts of data to improve business intelligence. It is headquartered in Billerica, MA, US. HP expects to close the
acquisition in the second quarter.

L-1 Sells Intelligence Business to BAE

L-1 Identity Solutions completed the sale of its intelligence services businesses to BAE Systems for $303 million. L-1 announced in September that it would sell off SpecTal,
Advanced Concepts, and McClendon to BAE. Safran will require the rest of L-1’s businesses later on this year.

Motorola Mobility Acquires Mobile Enterprise Security, Software Firm

Motorola Mobility announced that it has acquired Three Laws Mobility (3LM), a developer of mobile enterprise security software and solutions and mobile device management products for the Android operating
system. The agreement was completed in late 2010, Motorola Mobility said; terms of the transaction were not disclosed. 3LM’s technology is designed to enable the adoption of Android devices by businesses and governmental entities.

Accenture Teams with NetApp for Two New Technology Agreements

Accenture and NetApp expanded their relationship with a pair of new technology agreements. The first is a joint effort to develop, market, and deliver a set of solutions for data center optimization and
virtualization, cloud computing, and application optimization. The companies will also collaborate on expanding NetApp’s Professional Services organization by shifting Accenture employees to provide consulting and integration services. No financial terms
for these agreements were disclosed.

Capgemini and Oracle Launch Analytics Service for Telecoms

Capgemini and Oracle jointly launched a new analytics services for the telecommunications industry. The new Business Analytics for Telecommunications is designed to handle all
aspects of the industry’s analtyics needs, including customer relationships, campaign performance, and customer analytics. The new solution uses the Oracle Communications Data Model, and can be set up in 10-12 weeks, according to the companies.

McAfee, RSA Team Up to Bolster Security

McAfee and RSA have joined each other’s respective partner programs and announced that they will work together to combine applications in an effort to bolster IT security.
The vendors have integrated McAfee Vulnerability Manager and the RSA Archer eGRC platform to address business impact, policy enforcement, and compliance reporting of enterprise vulnerabilities.

Morpho, CASSIS to Offer EMVco Standard Payment Offering

Morpho and CASSIS International announced an alliance to provide advanced near field communication (NFC) offerings to European mobile operators and service providers. As part
of this joint partnership, they have unveiled the Proximity Payment System Environment (PPSE) mechanism and the associated Mobile Wallet and Payment Application set designed to manage multiple banking applications from different banks and payment schemes
on one SIM card in an interoperable way. The PPSE and applications set have been designed in line with the latest EMVco specifications and guidelines.

Nokia Siemens, MoreMagic to Provide Commerce Services

Nokia Siemens Networks and MoreMagic Solutions announced an agreement to provide mobile commerce and financial services via the jointly developed Mobile Payment
Solution. Mobile Payment Solution provides services for money transfer, mobile banking, mobile payments, and near-field communication proximity payments.

CenturyLink Announces Reseller Deal with Verizon

CenturyLink announced a reseller deal with Verizon that will allow it to offer Verizon Wireless services to its voice and broadband customers. CenturyLink said it will offer
a complete lineup of Verizon Wireless mobile devices, including tablet computers. CenturyLink also said it plans to continue to invest in its network infrastructure, despite recently reported declines in revenue.

ZTE Joins NXP Semiconductor for NFC Technology in New Phones

ZTE has teamed with NXP Semiconductors to include Near Field Communications (NFC) technology in the next generation of ZTE handsets, the companies announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress. Phones with the new
technology will be available beginning in the second quarter of 2011. ZTE says the NFC-enabled phones will be usable for functions such as mobile payments, transportation fees, and as a physical access key.

Lenovo PCs Protected with AuthenTec Biometrics, RSA Authentication

Lenovo, AuthenTec, and RSA have joined forces to combine biometrics with strong authentication on select ThinkPad laptops. RSA’s
two-factor SecurID authentication has been integrated into the PC via AuthenTec’s TCS5 fingerprint sensor, which comes standard on ThinkPad laptops, including the ThinkPad T410s, X201, X201 tablet and W510.

NASA: Solar Flare Disrupts Some Radio Communications

NASA issued an update February 17 saying a wave of charged plasma particles from a huge solar eruption has glanced off the Earth’s
northern pole, lighting up auroras and disrupting some radio communications. Earth appears to have escaped a widespread geomagnetic storm, however, with the effects confined to the northern latitudes. “There can be sporadic outages based on particular
small-scale events,” said Dean Persnell, project scientist at NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory at Goddard Space Flight Center.

Cricket Expands Availability of Muve Music Service

No-contract wireless carrier Cricket Communications, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless, announced the availability of its Muve Music service in 13 additional
markets across the US. Customers in those markets can now purchase the Muve Music unlimited wireless rate plan along with the new Samsung Suede mobile phone. The $55 per month service debuted in Las Vegas.

Deutsche Telekom Lays Out Plans for Improved Wi-Fi Offerings

Deutsche Telekom detailed its upcoming initiative to make mobile Internet use via Wi-Fi easier for its customers. The planned components of the project include the expansion of its Wi-Fi hotspots, Wi-Fi interconnection
agreements with France Telecom, new apps for Android and iOS designed to simplify hotspot usage, and the installation of Wi-Fi on Lufthansa long-haul flights and InterCity Express trains. The project is expected
to roll out in 2011, with full deployment in 2012.

Deutsche Telekom to Launch NFC-Based “Mobile Wallet” Service in 2011

Deutsche Telekom announced its “Mobile Wallet” phone-based payment service. The system will use Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow future devices on the company’s network to communicate with
point-of-sale terminals. The company says the new service will include security measures based on established international security standards for payment services. The company also plans on using the platform to bring customers promotional offers from
event organizers, banks, and transportation companies. The Mobile Wallet service is scheduled to launch in Germany and Poland this year, with Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and others to follow in 2012.

Deutsche Telekom Launches Travel & Surf EU-Wide Data Plans

Deutsche Telekom launched its new “Travel & Surf” data plan for customers in the EU. Covering smartphones, tablets, and laptops, the new plan will features tiers ranging from EUR 1.95 for a 10MB day pass, to EUR 4.95
for a 50MB day pass, as well as a EUR 14.95 per week subscription option for unlimited data. The new plans will begin rolling out March 1, with full availability to customers across the EU by July 1, 2011.

States’ Cooperative Purchasing Group Extends Sprint Contract

Sprint said the Western States Contracting Alliance (WSCA) has extended its contract with Sprint through Oct. 31, 2012. The latest contract extension, worth an estimated $360
million, increases the total lifetime value of the contract to $1.4 billion since 2006. WSCA enables cooperative multi-state contracting to help states acquire services in a cost-effective and efficient manner. States purchasing Sprint’s products and
services under WSCA include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Telefonica O2 Ireland Launches O2 Money Pre-Paid Money Card

Telefonica O2 Ireland launched a new pre-paid money card. The “O2 Money Card” marks the company’s first foray into the financial services market, and offers its users the ability to “load” the card with any amount
between EUR 20 and EUR 350 per day. The card can be used at any location that supports electronic Visa payments, in-person, or online. Purchasing the O2 Money Card itself will cost EUR 4.99, while loading money will incur a fee ranging from EUR 0.99 to EUR
2.99, depending on the amount added to the card’s balance.

Six Rural Telcos Join Verizon Wireless LTE Initiative

Verizon Wireless announced that customers of six rural carriers in the US will be among the first in rural communities to have access to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks as part of the Verizon Wireless
LTE in Rural America program, which was introduced last June. To date, six rural carriers have announced their participation in the program and “many others” are in active negotiations with Verizon Wireless, the carrier said. Bluegrass Cellular, Cellcom,
Cross Wireless, Pioneer Cellular, Strata Networks, and Thumb Cellular have leased spectrum from Verizon Wireless covering, in total, more than 1.8 million people and nearly 58,000 square miles in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Utah.

Qualcomm Unveils Next Gen Mobile Chipset Family

Qualcomm unveiled its next mobile processor architecture for the Snapdragon family. The new processor micro-architecture, code-named Krait, in the next-generation Snapdragon will offer speeds up to 2.5GHz per core
and deliver 150 percent higher overall performance, as well as 65 percent lower power than currently available ARM-based CPU cores, Qualcomm said. The new chipsets will be available in single-, dual-, and quad-core versions and include a new Adreno GPU
series with up to four 3D cores, and an integrated multi-mode LTE modem.

BroadVision Launches ClearVale PaasPort Express

BroadVision launched its Clearvale PaasPort Express, a free, upgrade-able version of its Platform as a Service product. PaasPort Express allows the telecommunications company to build new businesses within the
cloud, providing customers with social networks that can later be upgraded as future premium services become available. Telecommunications companies can freely distribute it over the cloud, under its company brand. In other news, Japan’s SOFTBANK TELECOM
announced it will launch a program this month to market social networks using it.

CA Launches Increased Security Features for Cloud Service

Computer Associates (CA) updated its CA Advanced Authentication Cloud Service with several new security features. These include tagless device identification, mobile authentication, and improved interoperability with CA
SiteMinder. The company notes that the new security measures were added to the product as a result of technology it acquired from its purchase of Arcot. More information about this latest release is available from CA’s IT Security Solutions page.

Computer Associates (CA) launched the new CA Partner Solution Center, a new channel initiative for its CA Virtual Portfolio. The Center will offer
partner-specific sales, marketing, and technical assets to help resellers of CA Virtual products. The company says the new offering will prevent “virtual stall” by provisioning, controlling, assuring, securing, and optimizing virtual environments.

CSC Joins VMware vCloud Datacenter Service Program

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) joined the VMware vCloud Datacenter Services Program. This move means that the company’s CloudCompute and CSC BizCloud service will be available as VMware vCloud Datacenter Services.

Sequans, Alcatel-Lucent Partnering for TD-LTE Products

Paris-based Sequans Communications said it is working with Alcatel-Lucent to ready TD-LTE solutions, in all frequency bands, to support large-scale trials and commercial
deployments worldwide in 2011, including in China and India. The new products will be such low-cost devices as USB dongles, indoor and outdoor Customer Premises Equipment, portable Wi-Fi routers, and connected tablet and notebook computers. Sequans
Communications is a 4G chipmaker, supplying LTE and WiMAX chips to equipment manufacturers and mobile operators. Sequans and Alcatel-Lucent supported China Mobile’s TD-LTE trial network at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai last year.

Alcatel, China Mobile to Collaborate on Radio Access Network

Alcatel-Lucent signed an agreement to develop a next generation radio access network (RAN) alongside China Mobile, an operator considered a leader in time division –
synchronous code division multiple access and longterm evolution (TD-LTE). The companies will launch technical and economic studies, and investigate the technologies needed to build a central, cloud based RAN, providing a common platform for multi-mode
wireless standards such as GSM, 3G, and LTE. The agreement was signed by Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell.

Alcatel-Lucent Demos VoLTE Call on 4G-LTE Network

Alcatel-Lucent demonstrated a Voice over longterm evolution (VoLTE) call – using a pre-commercial handset on its IMS and 4G-LTE network – to and from Verizon Wireless, GSM Association, and LG Electronics
Worldwide booths this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The demo featured IMS and LTE based video communications, and wideband audio calls, for incorporating VoLTE into areas such as mobile retail, remote healthcare, and early
childhood education.

Alcatel to Upgrade Wireless Networks in Togo, New Zealand

Alcatel-Lucent was selected to upgrade Togo Cellulaire’s 2G/3G wireless network in Togo. This extension is the new phase of a multi million EUR wireless broadband network transformation contract, awarded to
Alcatel-Lucent in 2010, to extend its network capacity. It also reported that mobile operator Telecom New Zealand will deploy the 9900 Wireless Network Guardian to provide insight into the performance of subscriber devices and applications – as well as IP
data use – in its 3G network and operations center.

Alcatel Selected for Small Cell Trial in Saudi Arabia

Alcatel-Lucent was selected by Zain for a small cell trial in Saudi Arabia. Zain plans to address challenges such as better filling mobile coverage holes, increasing a network’s capacity to deal with mounting
mobile traffic, and creating potential new value-added services. Zain is the first mobile operator in Saudi Arabia to trial Femto based small cells.

Ericsson Demonstrates Voice Services on TD-LTE

Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, and ST-Ericsson demonstrated voice services using an end to end, time division – longterm evolution
(TD-LTE) technology, during a special showcase at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The companies also showcased multimedia applications such as video streaming and Web browsing, using a Sony Ericsson device embedded with an ST-Ericsson TD-LTE modem
and voice over LTE client. At the same time, Ericsson is collaborating with Polycom on an integrated product for hosted telepresence services. It will allow telecommunications operators to deliver high definition
visual communications services.

Ericsson to Prepare Telstra’s Australian Network for 4G

Ericsson reported an agreement to upgrade Telstra’s existing network with 4G / longterm evolution (LTE) technology in the central business districts of several Australian cities and regional centers. By the end of
2011, Telstra will offer LTE mobile broadband devices that operate seamlessly across the 850-MHz and 1,800-MHz spectrum ranges.

Ericsson, Verizon, Samsung Complete VoLTE Call

Ericsson, Verizon Wireless, and Samsung Electronics completed what they said is one of the world’s first longterm evolution (LTE)
voice calls using a smartphone with IMS client for Voice over LTE. The demonstration is considered a step toward the commercial availability of interoperable global devices and network infrastructure that supports voice services over LTE. The companies
used Ericsson’s LTE demonstration network and a Samsung 4G LTE handset, which will be available through Verizon Wireless in the US later this year.

Ericsson to Upgrade Yoigo’s 3G HSPA Network

Ericsson entered an agreement with TeliaSonera subsidiary Yoigo to extend its 3G highspeed packet access mobile broadband network in Spain, to increase the operator’s network coverage and, ultimately, its ability
to adopt 4G / longterm evolution services. The agreement runs until December 2014, alongside a prior managed services agreement that has also been extended to that time. Ericsson also announced it successfully deployed a commercial CDMA EVDO network in
Scandinavia, with Net1 / ice.net.

Ericsson to Upgrade EMOBILE’s Services Network

Ericsson signed a managed services agreement with EMOBILE – a Japanese mobile broadband operator – to upgrade its network with 42M-bps highspeed packet access technology. The upgrade will allow EMOBILE to better
address the growing demand for mobile services.

Frontier Upgrades Wireline Infrastructure in West Virginia

Frontier Communications said it has invested nearly $60 million into upgrading its wireline telecommunications infrastructure in West Virginia since acquiring the assets from Verizon Communications last July.
The investment, which is nearly double what Frontier had expected to spend on network improvement, has brought broadband access to thousands of homes in the state, the carrier said.

HP Switch Technology Selected by CERN, Axcient

HP Networking announced its switch technology was selected by research institute CERN to improve its Geneva campus network infrastructure performance. CERN’s research community includes more than 10,000
scientists and engineers, requiring massive amounts of data. HP also reported it will provide servers and networking switches for Axcient, to power its data protection platform for small and mid-sized business customers.

Huawei Technologies introduced its new HetNet portfolio, for deploying a layered network – based on traffic distribution – and unveiled “Any Connection” Mobile Broadband Backhaul products for migrating to a LTE
infrastructure.

Juniper Announces MobileNext Software for HD Handoff

Juniper Networks announced a MobileNext, software for 2G/3G and longterm evolution networks. MobileNext software provides a seamless high definition voice and video handoff between 3G and LTE, while integrating
in-line services such as deep packet inspection, traffic direct for Internet offload, firewall, video optimization, MPLS, and application load balancing. It runs on Juniper’s MX 3D Universal Edge Router and Junos software.

Juniper Provides STC with Technology to Upgrade Network

Juniper Networks deployed its MX 3D Universal Edge Router and SRX 5800 Services Gateway for the Saudi Telecom Company, to provide IP services to upgrade its mobile network and accommodate future rich-media services
in Saudi Arabia.

NEC to Provide Femtocell for MegaFon Indoor Mobile Services

NEC Eastern Europe was selected by Russian mobile operator MegaFon to provide femtocell technology for future residential and enterprise indoor mobile services, planned for later in 2011. The femtocell technology was
successfully trailed with MegaFon subscribers in 2010.

NEC Developing SON Technology for LTE Networks

NEC Japan is developing new self-organizing network (SON) technology for the heterogeneous longterm evolution (LTE) network. The small cell LTE SON technology allows mobile operators to install a new base station in
any traffic hotspot area, without modifying the network.

NSN Wins LTE Contract with Telefonica O2 in Germany

Total Telecom reported that Telefonica O2 subscribers in Germany will be the first within the Telefonica group to enjoy ultra-fast mobile broadband services. The operator
will launch Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the coming months, having selected Nokia Siemens Networks as one of two suppliers for the rollout, using both 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands.

Telstra to Upgrade to 4G LTE Before Year’s End

Telstra revealed plans to upgrade its Next G network with 4G technology before the end of the year, at this year’s Mobile World Conference. The new network will use LTE technology to deliver increased speeds to “the
central business districts of all Australian capital cities and selected regional centres.” The new service will run on the company’s existing 1800MHz spectrum, and will be integrated with Telstra’s HSPA+ service, currently running on the 850MHz band. The
company says that devices that take advantage of the dual-mode network should also be available prior to the end of 2011.

ZTE and KPN Team up for LTE Trials in Germany and Belgium

ZTE and KPN jointly announced plans for LTE trials in Belgium and Germany. The program, beginning this year, is designed to test the limits of ZTE’s commercial equipment as a
possible upgrade path for KPN to install the technology on its mobile network. No specific dates for the trial have yet been announced.

Cisco, Tata Introduce Public TelePresence in Kenya, Uganda

Cisco Systems and Tata Communications unveiled public TelePresence suites for Safaricom, in Kenya and Uganda. The rooms are hosted at Serena Hotels’ luxury city suites
in Nairobi and Kampala; a third will be opened at Safaricom’s Joseph Center in Nairobi. Tata will provide connectivity and management, linking to public and private rooms throughout its network – spanning 32 locations on five continents – and those of its
partners.

Dell Introduces New Enterprise Mobility Services

Dell Services introduced new services for mobile device management, applications, and security. The Enterprise Mobility Services include enterprise scale, end to end
services to address hardware, software, communications technologies and services, and back-end data ce4nter infrastructure and storage, supporting multi-carrier mobile devices and operating systems. According to Dell, these services support open standards
for multi-carrier, multi-vendor, and multi-platform environments.

HP Providing Systems Integration for SK Telecom Companies

Hewlett-Packard (HP) reported it is providing systems integration services to SK Telecom, Korean Telecom, and LG U+, three South Korean telecommunications companies. In 2010, the firms cooperated – through a consortium –
to create the Wholesale Applications Community, a single, Korea-specific clearinghouse to link to a global application development initiative. WAC brings together more than 60 communications service providers, worldwide.

BT CSO Says Cyber Warfare Threat Exaggerated

A BT security analyst says that threats of cyber warfare are highly exaggerated, according to the BBC. Bruce Schneier, the chief security officer at BT, believes that using metaphors
like "cyber armageddon" do not equate with the incidents that are actually occurring. “What we are seeing is not cyber war but an increasing use of war-like tactics and that is what is confusing us," he said.

Canadian Government Attacked by Chinese Hackers

CBC News in Canada reported that a January cyber attack on the Canadian government allegedly from China has penetrated highly classified information. Canadian officials are trying to determine how much information
was stolen and who was behind the attacks, but the trail leads back to servers in China. Information from both Canada’s Finance Department and Treasury Board were infiltrated. It is not known if any other federal departments’ records were compromised.

1.7 Million Patients Affected by NY Hospital Data Theft

eWeek has discovered that backup tapes containing the personal information of more than 1.7 million patients, staff, vendors, and other personnel at North Bronx Healthcare Network in New York City was stolen from an
unlocked van back on December 23, but it wasn’t until February 9 that victims began receiving notification about the theft. The data breach pertains to patients who visited four hospitals between 1991 and December 2010, and the records contained Social
Security numbers, insurance data, and other sensitive information.

Report: Company Servers in China Used for Hacking Purposes

The AP reported that a Chinese national whom McAfee named as a hacker preying on Western oil companies has admitted that his company rents out storage space to other hackers. Song
Zhiyue works in sales for the Chinese company and admitted in a phone call that many hackers use the organization’s servers to remotely control other PCs. Zhiyue was cited in a McAfee report earlier this month as a cyberspy who had infiltrated computers in
the US, Taiwan, Greece, and Kazakhstan.

Adobe Releases Numbers on Flash 10.1, AIR Mobile Adoption

Adobe released a report on the adoption of its AIR and Flash 10.1 platforms for smartphones. The company said that its AIR platform has been used on more than 84 million smartphones and tablets running either Android
or iOS. The programming platform is powering thousands of applications running on both mobile operating systems. Meanwhile, Flash 10.1 has been installed on more than 20 million smartphones, according to Adobe. The company expects this number to grow
rapidly as it expands its catalogue of 35 approved devices, including up to 50 tablets expected to launch during 2011.

Oracle Updates Communications Service Delivery Family

Oracle released an updated version of its Oracle Communications Service Delivery family of products. The product line is designed to help service providers (CSPs) install Next-Generation Intelligent Network (NGIN)
solutions, network-enabled application stores (NEAS), and IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) as well as Long Term Evolution (LTE) network services. The primary feature of this new release is a NGIN platform based on Java and IT industry-standard technologies,

Oracle Releases Seibel Field Service Integration with Scheduler

Oracle released its new Siebel Field Service integration with Oracle Real-Time Scheduler. The new solution is designed to help companies more efficiently manage their field workers by providing a scalable scheduling

Agilent More Than Doubles Profits on Regional Strength

Agilent Technologies posted strong profits of $193 million USD, or $0.54 per share, for the 2011 fiscal first quarter ended January 31st, as all regions posted double-digit sales growth. This was up 144 percent from
2010 fiscal first quarter profits of $79 million, or $0.22 per share. Revenues were $1.52 billion, up 25 percent from 2010 fiscal first quarter revenues of $1.21 billion.

Allscripts Reports Fourth Quarter Results for Shortened Fiscal Year

Allscripts reported its financial results for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2010. Revenue for the quarter totaled $337.1 million, a 10% increase over the $306.4 million taken in during the same quarter
in 2009. The company’s net income finished the quarter at $38.7 million, up 14% from the $33.8 million reported in the same period of 2009. Earnings per share followed suit, going from $0.17 to $0.20 over the same period. Allscripts did not release its
financial results for the full year due to changing the end date for its fiscal year from May 31 to December 31, as a result of the company’s merger with Eclipsys. However, the company did provide guidance for its rescheduled 2011 fiscal year. It expects a
total revenue between $1.42 billion and $1.45 billion; net income ranging from $167.0 million to $176.0 million; and earnings per share between $0.86 and $0.90.

Capgemini Reports Revenue Gains, Impressive Profit Growth for 2010

Capgemini reported its financial results for the second half and full year ending December 31, 2010. For the half, the company’s revenue totaled EUR 4.48 billion, up slightly from the first half’s total of EUR 4.2
billion. Profits for the period were also up, finishing at EUR 170 million, after coming in at EUR 101 million for the first half. For the 2010 fiscal year, Capgemini reported revenues of EUR 8.96 billion, up about 4% over 2009’s total revenue of EUR 8.37
billion. Profits for the year finished at EUR 280 million, an impressive growth when compared to the EUR 178 million seen in the previous year.

CenturyLink Profit, Revenue Down in Fourth Quarter

CenturyLink said its fourth quarter 2010 net income and revenue both fell as its wireline business continued to decline. President and CEO Glen F. Post III also said its pending purchase of Qwest Communications
has made cost-cutting a challenge. CenturyLink is awaiting final regulatory approvals for the acquisition of Qwest, which is expected to happen in April. CenturyLink profit for the period ended Dec. 31 was $225.2 million, or 74 cents per share – down 2.2
percent from a year-earlier profit of $230.2 million, or 77 cents per share. Excluding one-time charges, the company said it earned 76 cents per share. Revenue fell 5.9 percent to $1.72 billion from $1.83 billion in the prior year fourth quarter. Internet
access revenue was up but the company lost revenue from telephone service, including long-distance calls, and network access. CenturyLink said its fixed-line business continue to decline, although it shrank at a rate of 12 percent, slower than the 15.8
percent decline it saw in the year-ago period. For the full year 2010, CenturyLink earned $947.7 million, or $3.13 per share. In 2009, it earned $647.2 million, or $3.23 per share. Revenue for the year rose to $7.04 billion from $4.97 billion. Qwest Communications this week also reported a fourth-quarter loss, primarily because of expenses related to its pending takeover by CenturyLink and a decline in traditional telephone revenue.

Cincinnati Bell Revenue Up Slightly

Incumbent local exchange carrier Cincinnati Bell announced financial results for the full year and fourth quarter of 2010. For the year, revenue was $1.4 billion, an increase of 3 percent from 2009. Net
income was $28 million, or 9 cents per share. Diluted earnings per share excluding special items was 31 cents, down 11 cents compared to 2009, primarily due to expenses associated with the acquisition of data center operator CyrusOne. Revenue for the
fourth quarter of 2010 was $363 million, a 5 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2009. A net loss of $19 million for the quarter resulted from a $36 million loss due to dept elimination. Fourth quarter 2010 net income excluding special items was $8
million compared to $24 million in 2009, and diluted earnings per share excluding special items was 3 cents, down 7 cents from 2009 due to CyrusOne acquisition expenses.

Comcast Revenue, Profit Up for Fourth Quarter 2010

Comcast, the largest US cable TV company and major provider of Internet access services, said fourth-quarter 2010 revenue rose 7.2 percent to $9.7 billion compared to the prior year’s fourth quarter, and that its
profits rose 6.6 percent, to slightly more than $1 billion. Earnings per share after special items were 35 cents. The company also said it would boost its quarterly dividend 19 percent to 45 cents a share a year. Comcast, based in Philadelphia, closed its
acquisition of a controlling interest in NBCUniversal about two weeks ago. The financial performance of NBCU was not included in Comcast’s earnings but will be in the next quarterly report. The firm said it lost 135,000 cable TV customers in the last
quarter of 2010, compared with a loss of 275,000 in the third quarter and 199,000 in the year-ago fourth quarter. For the full year, 2010, Comcast lost 757,000 cable TV customers.

comScore Posts Revenue Gains, Still Suffers Net Loss for 2010

comScore posted its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2010. For the quarter, the company’s revenue totaled $51.2 million, up 51.5% from $33.8 million reported for the same period in 2009.
Despite the gains, the company suffered a net loss of about $500,000 for the quarter, compared to a net income of $1.6 million. This caused a loss per share of $0.02, versus earnings per share of $0.05 during the same quarter of 2009. For the year,
revenues totaled $175 million, 37% higher than 2009’s total of $127.7 million. comScore suffered a net loss for the year as well, totaling $1.6 million, compared to 2009’s net income of $4 million. Losses per share were $0.05, compared to earnings per
share of $0.13 recorded in 2009. The company also added about 500 new customers over the course of the year, bringing its total subscriber-base to 1,752.

Dell Profits Up After Strong Commercial Business Results

Dell reported profits of $927 million USD – or $0.48 per share – for the 2011 fiscal fourth quarter ended January 28, 2011, following stronger than usual performance from its commercial business. According to Dell,
businesses loaded up on new systems and servers during the quarter, a strong sign that companies are increasing their spending on technology despite a weak economy. Dell profits were up 177 percent from 2010 fiscal fourth quarter profits of $334 million,
with $0.17 per share. Revenues were $15.7 billion, up five percent from 2010 fiscal fourth quarter revenues of $14.9 billion. For the full fiscal year, profits were $2.6 billion, or $1.35 per share, up 84 percent from 2010 fiscal fourth quarter profits of
$1.4 billion, or $0.73 per share. Full fiscal year revenues were $61.5 billion, up 16 percent from 2010 fiscal revenues of $52.9 billion. The company had projected a decline.

Lenovo’s Profits Climb on Notebook, Smartphone Sales

Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo reported profits of $127 million USD, or $1.03 per share, for the 2011 fiscal third quarter ended December 31st, as it increased market share in China with strong sales of laptops and
smartphones. This was up 28 percent, year to year. Revenues were $5.8 billion, up 22 percent from 2010 revenues.

PAETEC Reports Increased Revenue, Losses for Q4 and 2010

PAETEC releases its financial report for the fourth quarter and full year ending December 31, 2010. For the quarter, the company’s revenue was $429 million, up significantly from the $390 million reported for the
same quarter in 2009. Despite this, the company suffered a considerable net loss of $25.9 million, more than 10 times the $2.3 million it lost in the last quarter of 2009. For the year, the company’s revenue came in at $1.62 billion, up from the $1.58
billion reported for 2009. Net loss for the year was $57.5 million, or almost twice the net loss of $28.6 million suffered in 2009. The losses, for both the quarter and the year, were largely due to a total of $621.8 million spent on investing activities,
which includes the company’s acquisitions of Cavalier Telephone and XETA.

Qwest Revenue, Profits Down

Qwest Communications reported fourth quarter 2010 operating revenue fell 3.2% to $2.90 billion from $2.99 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009. Net loss in the quarter was $161 million, or 9 cents per share, versus a
profit of $108 million or 6 cents per share in the prior year. For the full year, profit was down more than 50%, to $450 million, compared to a profit of $903 million in 2009. Also for the full year, segment revenue declined 9 percent, primarily as growth
in strategic services was offset by lower long-distance and local voice revenue. Qwest and CenturyLink are awaiting final regulatory approvals for their merger, which Qwest said it expects to close in April.

Rogers Increases Annualized Dividend to $1.42 Per Share

Rogers Extends Class B Share Repurchasing Program with $1.5 Billion

Rogers successfully filed a document with the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) extending its repurchasing program for Class B Non-Voting shares. The company says that it plans to maintain the program as a method of
purchasing shares when it believes the values of these Class B shares exceed the prices they’re trading at. The maximum allowable purchase during the 12-month duration of the program is 39.8 million shares, representing approximately 10% of the public
float of the Class B shares. The total cost for this amount would be $1.5 billion. However, Rogers warns that it may purchase anywhere from 0 to the maximum amount of shares allowable, without prior notice.

Rogers Posts Increased Revenue, Profits for 2010

Rogers posted its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2010. The company’s quarterly revenue was $3.1 billion, up from the $3.05 billion posted for the same period last year. Net income fell
somewhat, dropping to $359 million after coming in at $370 million for the same quarter in 2009. However, Rogers earnings per share total actually rose to $0.64, up from $0.61 for Q4 2009. This was partially due to the completion of a $347 million share
repurchasing program, which returned 10.1 million shares of Class B stock to the company. For the year, Rogers posted a total revenue of $12.1 billion, up from $11.7 billion. Net income for 2010 rose to $1.7 billion, up from the $1.5 billion reported in
2009. This brought earnings per share up to $2.96, after coming in at $2.51 for the previous year. Rogers total retail subscribers rose to 8.9 million at the end of 2010, however its churn rate rose to 1.66%, compared to 8.5 million and 1.39% recorded in
2009.

Sprint Reports Solid Customer Growth but Losses Persist

Sprint reported that, during the fourth quarter of 2010, the company achieved its best total company wireless subscriber additions and net postpaid additions since the first and second quarters of 2006, respectively.
The company added nearly 1.1 million total wireless subscribers driven by net postpaid subscriber additions of 58,000, which include net subscriber additions of 519,000 for the Sprint brand – and the company’s best ever fourth quarter prepaid net
subscriber additions of 646,000. The company delivered postpaid churn of 1.86 percent – the best postpaid churn result Sprint has reported in the fourth quarter of any year. Sprint posted $8.3 billion USD in revenues, its best since the last months of
2008. Revenues for all of 2010, at $32.6 billion, were slightly ahead of a year earlier. Losses of $929 million in the fourth quarter pushed 2010’s full-year losses to $3.47 billion, about $1 billion higher than in 2009.

Swisscom Posts Flat Revenue, Falling Income, Impressive TV Growth

Swisscom posted its results for the 2010 fiscal year. The company’s revenue totaled CHF 12 billion, flat with 2009. Net income, however, fell slightly to CHF 1.8 billion, down from the CHF 1.9 billion reported for
2009. The company’s television service saw impressive growth for the year, gaining 81.5% and closing the year with 412 million subscribers. Swisscom’s retail broadband service also grew by 7.2% to reach 1.5 million active lines, and the company’s mobile
subscriber-based gained 4% to reach 5.8 million.

Telecom New Zealand Posts Lower Revenue, Profits for 2nd Half of 2010

Telecom New Zealand released its results for the half-year ending December 31, 2010. The company’s revenue fell slightly coming in at NZ$2.5 billion, versus the NZ$2.67 billion reported for the same half of 2009.
Net earnings took a more severe tumble, dropping 35% from the NZ$243 million reported in the second half of 2009, to the NZ$158 million reported for this past half. This resulted in earnings per share dropping from NZ$13.00 to NZ$8.00 over the same period.
The company blamed a combination of increased tax concerns and regulatory impacts for causing its declining results.

Telus Posts Impressive Q4, Flat Year in 2010 Results

Telus posted its financial results for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2010. For the quarter, the company’s revenue was CA$2.55 billion, up slightly from the CA$2.44 billion reported in the same quarter of 2009.
Q4 net income rose sharply to CA$227 million, compared to the CA$156 million reported for the same quarter, last year. This pushed earnings per share to CA$0.70, versus the CA$0.49 reported a year ago. For 2010, the company reported a total revenue of
CA$9.7 billion, up from CA$9.6 billion, reported for 2009. Net income was CA$1.0 billion, flat with 2009. Earnings per share, however, rose slightly, reaching CA$3.23 compared to the CA$3.14 posted for 2009. Over the course of the year the company also
added 119,000 wireless subscribers, and 48,000 TV subscribers.

Vonage Posts Heavy losses for Fourth Quarter, Year

Vonage released its financial report for the fourth quarter and full year 2010. For the quarter, the company reported a total revenue of $214 million, down slightly from the same quarter in 2009, when it took in $223
million. The quarter ended with a net loss of $41.6 million for the company, compared to the net income of $4.4 million reported for the same period last year. This produced a loss per share of $0.19, versus earnings per share of $0.02 for the same quarter
in 2009. For the year, the company’s revenue was $872 million, a slight increase from the $864 million reported for 2009. The year also produced a net loss for the company, totaling $83.6 million. This doubles the loss suffered in 2009, when the company
posted a negative result of $42.5 million. Losses per share for the year were $0.40, compared to a loss per share of $0.25 reported for 2009.

CSC Receives $67 Million US Army Task Order

Computer Services Corporation (CSC) received a contract from the US Army to provide support for the Program Executive Office Command Control Communications – Tactical (PEO C3T). The task order calls for CSC to provide
systems engineering and integration, network and interoperability engineering, architecture development, and information assurance. The agreement has a 1-year base period, a single 10-month option, and a total estimated value of $67 million.

AT&T Wins Health System Contract

AT&T announced that John Muir Health and MuirLab have signed a contract to deploy the AT&T Healthcare Community Online, the carrier’s flagship Health Information Exchange solution. The deployment will enable MuirLab’s

comScore released its first annual Mobile Year in Review report. The yearly paper is designed to inform
readers on trends occurring in the mobile product space during the previous year, including device usage, smartphone usership, browser and application usage, and other factors. Highlights of the 2010 report include US smartphone adopters growing to include
27% of the market, with Europe at 31%; 36% of Americans browsing the mobile Web; Japan leading the world with more than 79% of mobile users accessing some type of online media; and 56% of mobile users accessing a social networking site via their phone.

ICANN Publishes Proposal for IANA Handling of IPv4 Reassignment

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) posted a proposal which would give the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) the task or reassigning returned blocks of IPv4 addresses to Regional
Internet Registries (RIRs). Once active, this new Reclamation Pool would allow IANA to assign new addresses to RIRs at need, in any size block they choose. More information about the pending proposal can be found in a background report published by ICANN.

ICANN Publishes Final Report of DRDWG Working Group

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) released the final report of the working group on delegation,
re-delegation, and retirement of ccTLD’s (DRDWG) for public comment. The group is particularly interested in gathering opinions on whether the measures listed in the report would resolved the short and long-term issues identified within it. Following the
public comment period, ICANN’s ccNSO Council will decide whether to create a policy development process to recommend changes to ICANN’s current policies on delegation, re-delegation, and
retirement of ccTLDs (country code Top Level Domains).

Comcast, Rackspace, Others Join Internet Society’s World IPv6 Day

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, SoftLayer Technologies, and Rackspace Hosting have all joined the Internet Society‘s World IPv6 Day. The event, held on June 8, will
consists of a 24-hour long “test flight” of the new Internet protocol. The goal of the test is to examine the readiness of major Internet industry players for the IPv6 switchover. The Internet Society is stressing the importance of a smooth transition, as

RIM to Launch LTE, HSPA+ PlayBook Tablets this Year

Research In Motion (RIM) announced plans for two new versions of its PlayBook tablet at the World Mobile Congress, even before it has starting selling its previously-announced Wi-Fi and WiMax models. RIM said at the
World Mobile Congress that PlayBooks for LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and 3G HSPA+ networks and will go on sale by the end of year. Both new devices will also support Bluetooth tethering, connection to mobile hotspots via smartphones or other portable devices
acting as a Wi-Fi hotspots, and BlackBerry Bridge, which is software that allows use of features such as Messenger and E-mail from a BlackBerry Device on a PlayBook. RIM did not say which network operators will support the new models.

Boy-in-the-Browser Attacks Are Back, Warns Imperva

Imperva is warning of a resurgence in “Boy-in-the-Browser” (BitB) attacks, which can reroute a user’s traffic to an attacker-controlled server. These attacks are especially targeting banks, but can also hit
consumers. BitB are less sophisticated than Man-in-the-Browser attacks, but can be very difficult to detect.

Spam Diminished in 2010, but US Still Top Producer, Says Kaspersky

In its annual spam report, Kaspersky Lab found that the combined efforts of law enforcement, vendors, and security experts helped decrease the
amount of spam in circulation during the last two months of 2010 and reduced the level of spam messages originating from the US. The largest volume of spam traffic, 90.8%, was recorded on February 21, with a low of 70.1% occurring on October 28. The US
continued to be the leading distributor of spam, however, accounting for 11.33% of all unsolicited mail, followed by India with 8.3%, and Russia with 6.0%.

Kaspersky: Online Threats Skyrocketed in 2010

Kaspersky Lab‘s Threat Evolution Report for 2010, which was released this week, details how the number of online attacks jumped considerably in
the past year. Last year, Kaspersky recorded over 580 million Web-based attacks against users’ computers, nearly eight times more than the number of online attacks recorded in 2009. In 2010, the total number of online attacks logged by Kaspersky Lab and
local virus incidents logged on user computers, exceeded 1.9 billion. Attacks launched via Web browsers represented over 30% of this indicator.

Lookout Mobile Security to Android Users: New Trojan Is Lurking

A new Trojan that targets Android phones has been discovered by Lookout Mobile Security. The malware, known as HongTouTou, is making its rounds via packaged Android apps that are used by Chinese speakers. Lookout

24/7 Customer launched what it says is the first online predictive customer service app on the iPad. The Wow!px app is part of the company’s B2B twitter analytics tool, 24/7tweetview. The application works by
predicting customer service issues and offering self-help advice or live-chat assistance to remedy the issue. 27/7 Customer says the application is ideal for companies trying to lighten the load of calls on overworked customer service call centers.

AOL Launches Android Version of MapQuest App

AOL launched an Android version of its MapQuest mobile app. The application has all of the same functionality as the previously launched iOS edition, but also adds the company’s OpenStreetMap (OSM) data to allow for
navigation in other countries. Other features of the app include voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, voice search, quick access to commonly selected destinations, and real-time traffic information. The application is available now as a free download from

Telefonica of Offer Carrier Billing for BlackBerry App World Purchases

Telefonica joined with Research in Motion (RIM), makers of BlackBerry smartphones, to give customers access to BlackBerry App World with integrated carrier billing. The alliance
will allow customers to purchase applications from the mobile app store and have their purchased price applied to their monthly carrier bill. The companies say they are also adding support for carrier billing of in-app purchases. No specific date for the
launch of this method of billing was disclosed.

Telefonica O2 Launches Frigo Cloud-Enabled App Store

Telefonica O2 launched a new application service called Frigo. The new offering allows customers on the carrier’s network to download apps to phones, tablets, netbooks, mobile PCs, and set-top boxes. Each customer’s
purchases will also be backed up on the company’s cloud, giving them access to their data from any of the aforementioned device types. The new platform is compliant with the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC), and can be run on Android, Windows Mobile,
Java, and Symbian. Telefonica will be rolling Frigo out this year in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.

Telefonica O2 Signs Agreement to Pre-Install eBay on its Devices

Telefonica O2 signed an agreement with eBay which will see an app or link to its services pre-installed on Android, Windows Phone 7, Symbian, RIM and bada devices on the carrier’s
service in the UK. The agreement, which spans the next two years, will also call on eBay to prioritize the design of apps and mobile site formatting to be optimized for Telefonica O2’s device lineup. No financial terms for the agreement were disclosed.

IBM, WAC Launch App Store Platform for Mobile Operators

IBM and the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) announced the availability of a new cloud-based “white label” mobile app store. The store is designed to help mobile operators
quickly build their own online application stores and offer subscribers new applications and widgets for consumer and business use. The platform can also provide targeted marketing campaigns, IBM said. The app store is built on IBM WebSphere Commerce
software. IBM Global Business Services will offer integration and customization services to WAC members worldwide. China-base ZTE announced on February 14 the availability of its own app platform for mobile operators: iMarket.

China-based networking company ZTE introduced its cloud-based applications platform, called iMarket, at the Mobile World Congress. iMarket will be sold to telecom operators, offering them a converged trading and

CenturyLink, Frontier Communications, Windstream Communications, and Qwest Communications

Feds Shut Down Web Domains Involved with Child Porn

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) executed seizure warrants against 10 domain names of Web sites engaged in the advertisement and
distribution of child pornography as part of “Operation Protect Our Children,” a new joint operation between the DOJ and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This enforcement action was spearheaded by ICE’s Cyber
Crimes Center (C3) under a nationwide ICE initiative to identify, investigate and arrest those who prey on children. Individuals attempting to access the seized Web sites will now find a banner notifying them
that the domain name of that Web site is under the control of federal authorities.

Napolitano Outlines FY 2012 Budget Request for Homeland Security

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano unveiled a $57.0 billion USD fiscal year 2012 budget request, outlining

GAO Releases Preliminary Observations on Border Security

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released preliminary testimony regarding how well the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Border Patrol has been able to detect and respond to illegal activity along the Southwest border with Mexico. In
order to provide data for the testimony, the GAO analyzed DHS border security documents and information supporting border security measures reported by DHS. Since DHS is currently replacing its border security measures, Border Patrol officials expect that
they will need fewer resources to secure the border. GAO will continue to assess this issue and report the final results later this year.

Google Launches Personal Site Blocking Extension for Chrome

Google released an experimental extension for the Chrome browser designed to enable users to block specific sites from Google search results. The extension, called Personal Blocklist, lets users block malicious and spam-ridden sites such as content farms and fake download pages from appearing in their future results by blocking
them, one-by-one, as they appear. The extension will also share which sites are being blocked by other Google users. The company said it will use this information to better refine its own measures against such sites appearing in its general search
results.

AVG Study: Smartphone Users Na‹ve in Terms of Security Risks

A new study from AVG found that more than one-third of the 734 US-based smartphone users surveyed are unaware of the risks involved with using the devices for financial purposes or to store personal information. Of
those surveyed, 13% said that location data had been unknowingly embedded on their handsets, enabling other people to track their locations. Only 21% of those interviewed said they were aware that such a thing could happen.

Bell Canada Launches HTC HD7 Windows 7 Phone

Bell Canada launched the HTC HD7 Windows Phone 7-powered smartphone on their network. The phone, exclusive to Bell in Canada, features a 4.3″ high resolution screen, a 720p video
camera, a 1Ghz processor, 16GB of internal memory, and a built-in kickstand. Prices for the new device begin at $99.95 on a 3 year contract with a minimum $50 voice/data. The HTC HD7 is also available contract-free for $599.95. More information about the

HTC Debuts Two New “Facebook Phones”

HTC unveiled two new smartphones that feature dedicated Facebook buttons for easy access to the popular social networking site – the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa. Both phones have a Facebook button that lets users easily
update their status, upload photos, check into places, and share news articles. Both run Android 2.4 and have back-facing 5-megapixel cameras and front-facing VGA cameras for video calls. The new handsets are expected to ship in major European and Asian
markets in the second quarter of the year. No word yet on pricing, carriers, or release date in the US.

LG Debuts First Tablet Device, New 3D Smartphone

LG Mobile Communications unveiled a new smartphone, the Optimus 3D, and its first tablet device, the Optimus Pad. Both Android devices run on
Gingerbread (Android 3.0) and offer 3D video recording. The Optimus 3D smartphone includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture. It can record, view, and share 3D content. Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a personal
organizer, USB syncing, and mass storage, GPS, a music player, and 8GB of internal memory. The Optimus Pad marks LG’s entry into the tablet space. It also features 3D recording and video capability (and two 5-megapixel cameras), as well as a dual-core 1GHz
NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. It has an 8.9-inch display – the “optimal size” for a tablet, a company exec said. Specific pricing and release dates for the new devices have not been announced.

Microsoft Lays Out Plans for Windows Phone 7 Updates in 2011

Microsoft revealed some of the new features of its planned 2011 updates for the Windows Phone 7 operating system at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The first update, scheduled for some time in mid-March, is

Rogers to be Exclusive Carrier of Sony Experia PLAY in Canada

Rogers announced that it will be the exclusive carrier for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY in Canada. The new phone is designed to be a mobile gaming device, including having been certified by Sony’s Playstation
division. The smartphone’s features include a 4″ touchscreen, 5 MP camera, and a 1Ghz CPU with an embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor, all running on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The phone is expected to be available this spring, with Playstation

Sony Ericsson Adds New Smartphones to Xperia Family

Sony Ericsson has added three new smartphones to its Xperia family, including the new touchscreen Xperia Neo. The 3.7-inch Neo smartphone has a capacitive touchscreen with a 854-by-480 display. It will run
Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The Neo has an 8GB micro SD card included, expandable up to 32GB. Sony Ericsson also debuted the Xperia Pro, which features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and the Xperia PLAY, a combination

Sony Ericsson announced that its new Xperia PLAY, a “PlayStation certified” smartphone, will be available on the Verizon Wireless network this Spring. The combination smartphone/gaming device runs on the latest

ZTE Launches “Skate” Flagship Android Smartphone

ZTE launched its new flagship Android smartphone at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The device, called the Skate, is designed to be light and thin, weighing 120g, and featuring a 4.3″ touchscreen. The smartphone

Facebook Announces Quartet of Upcoming Facebook Integrated Phones

Facebook announced its integration with the upcoming generation of phones from INQ and HTC. The pair of upcoming devices from INQ, the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q, feature full
integration with the social networking site, including single sign-on; a homescreen with the user’s Facebook photos, news feed, status updates, and videos; and quick links to chat, messages, Places, and notifications. For HTC, the ChaCha and Salsa handsets
feature a new dedicated Facebook button, which gives users one-touch access to status updates, photo uploading, and sharing. The company also said numerous other manufacturers will be integrating its services into their handsets over the course of
2011.

Twitter Launches Crowdsourced Twitter Translation Center

Twitter launched the Twitter Translation Center. The new project is designed to expedite
the launch of Twitter in additional languages by crowdsourcing the translation of its Web pages to the site’s user community. Twitter is currently available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. These languages will all be
available for volunteers in the Translation Center. However, the Center will also support contributions to translating the site into as-yet unsupported languages, such as Russian and Turkish. Twitter has been using crowdsourced translations since 2009, but
this is the first time the company has created a centralized site for its translation efforts.

Alcatel, NTT DoCoMo Developing Live Streaming Technology

Alcatel-Lucent is working with DoCoMo Communications Laboratories Europe – the German research center of Japanese service provider NTT DoCoMo – on a joint project expected to allow end users to broadcast live video streams to social networking sites, using a mobile device. Streamed content can be automatically tagged using facial recognition
technology.

Cisco Provides UC Technology for Kuwait Nat’l Petroleum

Cisco Systems announced it deployed Unified Communications (UC) technology for Kuwait National Petroleum Co. (KNPC), at its headquarters – and refineries and marketing officers throughout Kuwait – to accommodate 8,500
staff. The UC deployment allowed KNPC to upgrade its existing data network infrastructure, and migrate its voice, video, and data networks to a single, converged communications network. Cisco partner Universe Computers provided project implementation.

Google launched its new One Pass payment system for digital content. The system offers “purchase-once, view-anywhere functionality” designed to let buyers port
content to the device of their choice. The payment system allows for user authentication, payment processing, and administration of content. One Pass uses Google Checkout to accept payments, and is manageable via an online dashboard. Interested content

Alcatel-Lucent is launching a new 3G “small cells” technology for indoor and outdoor high-traffic metro areas such as shopping malls, airports, and railway stations, as well as a second generation of its
9362 Enterprise Cell. The new Metro Cells integrate with an existing 3G network, and can extend 3G wireless coverage and capacity to public places with high levels of traffic.
