Goldman Sachs Restricts Facebook Investments to Non-US Clients

Financial Firm Goldman Sachs has chosen to limit its offering of investments in Facebook to non-US investors, The New York Times reports. The decision came because the
high-profile offering had resulted in an inquiry by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC planned to determine whether the expansive news coverage of the offering had caused it to violate the state and federal statutes against “general
solicitation and advertising” of investment opportunities. In an effort to avoid yet another run in with the SEC, Goldman chose to remove US investors from the equation entirely, despite the massive embarrassment of being unable to follow through on the
investment opportunity it had very recently marketed to its wealthiest clients.

Pew Finds Social Network Users Much More Likely to Volunteer

A new study from the Pew Internet & American Life project found that 75% of all US adults are active in some form of voluntary group or organization. According to its latest survey, Pew also found that the more the respondent was involved in online social networking, the more likely they were to belong to such an organization.
About 82% of online social network users participated in such groups, while only 56% of non-Internet users did. Twitter users in particular showed a high level of activity, with 85% volunteering in some way. The major reasons respondents gave for why the
Internet and social networks played such a major role in volunteering included making it easy to communicate with other volunteers, draw attention to an issue, organize activities, and find people to take leadership roles. Other important results included
the fact that 46% of respondents said they would not be as active in as many groups without the Internet, and 23% said the time they spent with their groups increased because of the Internet.

Microsoft Says 3rd Party SW Causing Phantom Data Problem for Phone 7

Microsoft told a tech blogger at SeattlePI.com that third-party software is responsible for a Windows Phone 7 problem that has caused, for some
users, megabytes of mysterious data uploading over 3G. Last week, Microsoft said it was investigating claims that its new mobile operating system was sending, by at least one account, up to 50GB of unidentified data per day, unprompted by the user. Even
when connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Windows Phones reportedly used 3G, potentially inflating users’ phone bills. A Microsoft spokesperson, responding to a seattlepi.com request for updated information, sent the following statement: “We have determined
that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially causes larger than expected data downloads. We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also
pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents.”

Facebook Quickly Reverses Decision to Share Users’ Personal Data

Facebook instituted and then quickly retracted changes to its policies covering what subscriber information is shared with third-party advertisers. The social networking site had originally changed the information available to include a user’s phone number and home address. While the sharing of these new information points required explicit permission to be granted before advertisers
could access them, a massive outpouring of anger greeted the change. Those protesting said problems included unclear explanations of what users were agreeing to, and unwanted correspondence from advertisers with whom the information was shared. In
response, Facebook announced that it had temporarily disabled the new sharing policy after receiving “useful feedback” from users. Facebook said, however, that it plans to relaunch the altered

Mashable Reports Advertisers Leaving Digital, Returning to TV

Digital advertising is losing ground to television, according to a report from Mashable. Recent statistics, provided by media management agency Strata show that 44% of responding
advertisers are most focused on television, not digital. This represents a 24% increase in interest over the previous quarter. Meanwhile, Interest in digital advertising fell to 21.1%. Mashable says the shift is due to advertisers being disappointed with
the efficacy of digital ad placement. Among digital venues, mobile fared the worst, coming in fourth among digital ad placement options, with 90% of respondents saying none of their clients had shown interest in placing ads with services such as iAds,
Google TV, or Apple TV. Digital display, social media, and search ads all fared better, but were still on the decline. Mashable notes that this survey does conflict with the predictions of another industry analysis firm, eMarketer, which predicted a 10.5%
increase in online ad buys for 2011.
