National Labor Board Steps in on Case of Firing over Facebook Comments

The National Labor Board has gotten involved in the case of a woman who was allegedly fired over derisive posts about her employer on Facebook, the New York Times reports. This
marks the first official acknowledgement of comments made on a social network being considered protected activity. The company, American Medical Response of Connecticut, says the firing was due to the employee violating a company policy which prohibits its
employees from mentioning the company on social media sites “in any way.” A spokesperson from the labor board says this activity would clearly be protected under the National Labor Relations Act in the same manner as a water-cooler conversation would be;
furthermore, the company’s social networking policy was overly broad, and limited its worker’s ability to discuss working conditions. For its part, the employer says the labor board’s accusations are without merit, and cites multiple complaints about the
employee in question as additional grounds for her firing. The case is scheduled to be heard in court on January 25, 2011.

languages over the next few days. Interested users can try the new technology now at Google’s preview page.

WSJ: ZTE, Huawei Excluded from Sprint Contract

The Wall Street Journal reported that Sprint Nextel has excluded China-based telecom equipment suppliers ZTE and Huawei from a multi-billion dollar contract to upgrade its carrier network at least partly because of national security concerns expressed by the Pentagon and some US lawmakers. Sprint has not commented on the Journal
report. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the Journal said the Defense Department and lawmakers are concerned about the security implications of letting Huawei and ZTE equipment into critical US infrastructure. The report also quoted an
unidentified source as saying security concerns played a key role in Sprint’s decision to exclude Huawei and ZTE but that there were also doubts about the ability of the companies to execute the job. The Chinese firms, according to the Journal report, had submitted lower bids than their competitors, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and Samsung. Sprint reportedly plans to award the project contract by
year’s end.

list that Google allows them to download for personal use. This circumvention of its intent did not go unnoticed by Google, who released a statement calling Facebook out for freely using data stored by other entities while being so closed with its own data. It remains unclear
whether Google intends to pursue any additional methods of blocking Facebook, as of the time of writing.
