Comcast Posts Lower Profit in Third Quarter; Revenue Up

Cable giant Comcast said its third quarter profit was $867 million, or 31 cents a share, down 8.2% from $944 million, or 33 cents a share, in last year’s third quarter. A slowdown in subscriber growth and costs
related to the company’s deal for NBC Universal weighed on performance. The quarterly results included a charge of 1 cent a share from costs related to the NBCU transaction, while last year’s results benefited from tax benefits offset by a financing fee.
Excluding those items, Comcast’s earnings came to 32 cents per share. Revenue increased 7.3% to $9.49 billion. Cable revenue rose 6.9% to $8.98 billion, while programming revenue was up 9% to $416 million. Comcast’s local advertising revenue was up 27% to
$461 million, helped by strong political advertising. Comcast’s growth in revenue-generating units – a tally of all subscription services provided – was less than half its year-ago performance, with a gain of 421,000. The company lost 275,000 video
customers even as its total monthly revenue per video customer was up to $129.75 from last year’s $117.54. Total video revenue was up 2.2% to $4.88 billion.

Google Paying a Fraction of Normal Income Taxes Thanks to Loopholes

Bloomberg posted a lengthy article on the tax practices of Google that allow it to pay extremely low tax rates. The article says that Google uses several methods of funneling
foreign profits through channels in Ireland, the Netherlands, and, most recently, Bermuda to reduce its tax rate to as little as 2%, a tenth of what most businesses pay. While most of these practices are not strictly illegal, and some even have the
blessing of the IRS, the loopholes have allowed Google to retain as much as $60 billion that it would have otherwise paid out as income taxes. Google is by no means the only company to participate in such practices; in fact, Facebook is currently preparing to launch a similar structure to reduce its own tax burden. Despite the outrage voiced by many industry personalities, the IRS has yet to show any interest in examining Google’s tax
practices.

UK Airline Industry Fewer Security Checks; More “Coherent” Process

The UK airline industry has backed British Airways‘ call for changes to airport security checks. Mike Carrivick, of BAR UK, which represents more than 80 airlines,
said the industry should “step back and have a look at the whole situation,” saying some “completely redundant” security checks should go. The BBC reported that he also criticized the US for imposing increased checks on
US-bound flights but not on its own domestic services, saying the UK should stop “kowtowing” to US security demands. The airlines are particularly angry about different requirements from different governments and agencies, and want to combine security
checks into a ” into a single, coherent process.” In the US this week, the Transportion Security Administration acknowledged that it has implemented a more thorough (and intrusive) "pat down" procedure for
airline passengers who decline full body scans by machine, or who are tagged for a second screening.

IBM said it has created and patented a natural disaster warning program that can predict future disasters using analytical data from past occurrences. The program also uses the data in order to predict the damage zone

sensors, known as MEMS accelerometers (which are within computer hard disk drives) to analyze information generated by seismic events. The invention also uses sensor data to assess and provide early warnings for tsunamis, which can follow earthquakes that
