News Corp Blocks Cablevision Subscribers from Fox.com, Hulu

The New York Times is reporting that News Corporation, parent company of Fox television networks, temporarily blocked Cablevision customers from accessing its programming on Fox.com, and Hulu. The blockage was a
strategic move in News Corp’s fight with Cablevision, who is refusing to pay higher access fees for Fox’s channel lineup. The Times reports that consumers, and several industry groups complained that the move was anti-consumer, and that access to the shows
on those Web sites had nothing to do with the broadcast television negotiations. For its part, Hulu says it is trying to remain neutral, but was forced to block Fox shows due to the News Corp’s stake in the joint offering, which also includes Disney and
NBC. The actual blockage only lasted a matter of hours. It was lifted when the company realized that non-Cablevision subscribers were also being affected.

F-Secure: Fake Firefox, Chrome Alerts Distribute Malware

Security researchers at F-Secure say fake Firefox and Chrome warning pages are being used to distribute malware. A new malware distribution campaign uses fake versions of the malicious site warnings commonly

“this site may harm your computer” have been spotted. The pages look like the real thing, except for a “Download Updates” button, which – if clicked – leads ultimately to the installation of malware.

Facebook Responds to Application-Based Privacy Leak, Offers Solution

Facebook released its response to recent reports that applications on the site may have been sharing user IDs without authorization. According to the company, the breach, which it says was greatly exaggerated by

user’s ID in order to facilitate the customization features of the social network’s partner sites. Several application developers have already devised solutions to blocking user ID transmission. However, Facebook is proposing the widespread encryption
of parameters transmitted by applications. The site’s engineers want to implement these changes, but would like to collect feedback on the proposal from the user and developer communities prior to implementing it. The full technical details of the changes are available from Facebook’s developer’s page.
