Bell Canada Signs Agreement to Acquire Broadcaster CTV

Bell Canada announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Canadian broadcaster CTV. Bell, which currently owns 15% of CTV, will acquire the remaining 85% for approximately $1.3 billion in equity value,
and $1.7 billion in proportionate debt, bringing the total value of the transaction to $3.2 billion. The company plans to use this acquisition to help it expand its upcoming Bell Fiber IPTV (internet protocol television) service. The deal is subject to
regulatory approval, and is expected to close some time in mid-2011.

Google Buys Interactive Mapping Software Maker Quiksee

Google acquired interactive mapping software maker Quiksee. The company produces a Web-based application that allows users to create virtual tours of real locations using satellite and terrestrial imagery. No details
about the acquisition were revealed in the acquired company’s announcement. However, it seems very likely that the technology included in the purchase will be applied to Google’s own mapping software at some point in the future.

Hewlett-Packard to Acquire Security Firm ArcSight for $1.5B

Hewlett-Packard (HP) reached an agreement to acquire ArcSight – a security and compliance management firm – for approximately $1.5 billion USD, or $43.50 per share. ArcSight
technology will be integrated into existing HP security hardware, software, and services offerings. The acquisition is expected to close by year’s end.

IBM Announces Agreement to Acquire OpenPages

IBM announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire OpenPages, a maker of risk and compliance management software. The assets of the acquired company will be used to expand IBM’s business analytics
capabilities. IBM says all client and partner investments in OpenPages will be preserved, and, following the close of the transaction, the acquisition’s products will be incorporated into its Business Analytics software portfolio. No financial terms for
the transaction were disclosed.

PAETEC Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Cavalier Telephone

PAETEC announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the privately-held Cavalier Telephone Corporation. The $460 million transaction will bring about 17,000 fiber-route miles into PAETEC’s coverage
footprint. PAETEC says this deal will also allow it to expand the range of connectivity options available to its customers.

Adobe Teams with Intel for AIR Apps Store

Adobe announced that it is teaming with Intel to create a framework by which developers distribute and monetize applications designed on Adobe’s AIR platform. The applications will
be available through Intel’s AppUP storefront. This new framework, dubbed “Melrose,” will allow developers to sell, track, and re-publish their app through multiple channels. More information can be found at Adobe’s Melrose page. The AIR-based app store is expected to become available some time during the fourth quarter of the year.

Belgacom Signs Two Strategic Alliance Agreement to Expand it TV Line

Belgacom announced that it has signed two new strategic agreements with Jinni and in3Depth Systems to expand the offerings of its Belgacom TV services. In3Depth systems is a maker of human interface devices which
can be controlled via gestures, while Jinni is the creator of a software solution designed to help users discover new media based on their previous viewing choices. The company says these deals will help bring new products to various aspects of its
business from TV programming, to e-learning, and video games.

Cisco, Accenture Forge Joint Initiative in South Africa

Cisco South Africa and Accenture South Africa established the Accenture & Cisco Business
Group
, a cross company initiative for helping clients embed collaboration and data center virtualization into business processes. It will target clients in sectors such as communications, manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, resources and
energy, government, and social infrastructure, and will support sales, marketing, customer engagement, and solution development by both companies.

Nokia Joins Intuit to Create Mobile Marketing Service for Small Biz

Nokia announced that it has formed a partnership with Intuit, makers of QuickBooks, to offer mobile marketing services to small businesses. Although details remain sparse, the companies say that commercial
availability should begin some time in the fourth quarter of 2010, and that it is designing the service to help smaller businesses take advantage of the growing mobile ad market, which was previously limited to larger players.

Open-Xchange Signs Japanese Distribution Agreement with Next IT

Open-Xchange announced that it has signed a distribution agreement with Next IT for its hosted and on-premises solutions to be marketed in Japan. The deal will see Next IT offering Open-Xchange’s products
alongside its own, with Enet Solutions offering its hosting solutions for the hosted version of the software. No financial terms for the agreement were disclosed.

Opera Announces Pair of Contracts with STB Makers

Opera announced the signing of two deals with set-top box (STB) manufacturers. The first will see the company teaming with MMH to provide a jointly produced SDK and a suite of Web-based TV content for televisions
using the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) platform. The second deal focuses on a joint effort between Opera and Trident to bring a HbbTV compliant Web browser to Trident’s PNX84xx-family of system-on-chip solutions. Both joint offerings are in their
early stages, and are currently being unveiled at the IBC industry conference in Amsterdam.

Oracle Joins Wipro for Lifecycle Management Solution for CPG Industry

Oracle announced that it has teamed with Wipro Technologies jointly develop a product lifecycle management solution for the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry. The so called process integration pack (PIP)
solution will be developed using Oracle’s Application Integration Architecture (AIA), and will feature full integration with Oracle’s Agile Product Life Cycle Management (PLM). No specific timeframe for the joint product has been set.

European Organizations Lose Billions Yearly from IT System Compromise

CA Technologies released an independent report revealing that European organizations are collectively losing more than 17 billion euros in revenue each year in time taken to recover from IT downtime. The Avoidable Cost
of Downtime 2010 Report illustrates that the financial losses associated with IT outages quickly escalate the longer organizations take to fix them. The survey of 1,808 organizations across 11 European countries reveals that each suffers an average of 14
hours of IT downtime a year, which equates to almost 1 million hours across Europe. The UK experienced the most downtime with an average per organization of 27 hours a year.

AT&T Announces New All for Less Plans for Small Businesses

AT&T announced the launch of a new “All for Less” bundled telecom service designed specifically for
small businesses. Starting at $90 a month, the plan includes up to 10 wired voice lines, wired broadband, and unlimited domestic calling. Optional services include wireless voice, mobile broadband, technical support, and Web hosting.

Bell Canada Launches Fibe TV in Montreal and Toronto

Bell Canada announced that it has launched its Bell Fibe TV services in Montreal and Toronto. The all-digital services uses the Microsoft Mediaroom multimedia software platform to
provide users with value-added services, such as on-demand television, PVR functionality, and live programming guides. The company expects to continue its expansion of the service, reaching 5 million households by the end of 2015.

BT Chooses Cisco as Backbone Provider for its Content Connect Network

BT announced that it has chosen Cisco‘s Content Delivery System as the backbone for its forthcoming video delivery network. Dubbed Content Connect, the network will deliver audio and
visual content over the Web to TVs, computers, and mobile devices. The company expects to introduce the new service some time in early 2011.

J.D. Power and Associates Releases 2nd 2010 Call Quality Study

J.D. Power and Associates‘ latest Wireless Call Quality Performance Study shows
that customer complaints over call quality have seen a sharp increase compared to six months ago. The semi-annual study examines seven areas of call performance across six regions in the US. The increased problems resulted in a total of 14 percent of
polled customers saying they “definitely will” or “probably will” switch carriers over the next 12 months, due to these issues. The most dissatisfied customers experienced problems with as much as 29 percent of all calls. Of the polled companies, Verizon Wireless was the winner in 3 regions, while the remaining regions were split among Sprint, US Cellular, and T-Mobile. AT&T consistently had the worst call quality in all but the North East and North Central regions.

Verizon Streamlines Intervals for Wholesale Business Special Services

Verizon Global Wholesale announced that it has streamlined its intervals for special access services. The company is standardizing and, in some cases, reducing the provisioning intervals for all DS1 and DS3
circuits. The new interval times will be seven days for DS1 circuits, and eight days for DS3 circuits. The company says this policy change will provide wholesale customers with greater stability, as well as decreased costs, due to a reduction in the number
of expedite requests they must make.

Intel Unveils 2nd Generation Core CPU Line, Latest Xeon CPU

Intel unveiled its upcoming second generation Intel Core processor line. The chips, codenamed “Sandy Bridge,” will include onboard support for HD video and graphically intense tasks thanks to its Advanced Vector
Extensions (AVX) technology. The new line of processors is expected to enter production later this year, with the first devices built around the second generation chips shipping in early 2011. Intel also unveiled an updated Xeon processor specifically for
2 core servers, which is capable of up to 32 simultaneous processing threads.

STMicroelectronics Launches ConneXt I/O Hub for Atom E6xx IVI Systems

STMicroelectronics announced the launch of its new I/O Hub (IOH), designed to work with Intel Atom-based E6xx series In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems. Designated ConneXt, the new
device connects to the system using a PCI Express interface, and allows for increased usability, including simultaneous GPS, cell phone, and Wi-Fi use. The first units are expected to be available in May 2011, with high-volume pricing at approximately
$7.50 per unit.

AWS Launches Customized Linux Image for EC2 Users

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of its Amazon Linux AMI, a supported and maintained Linux image designed for use on its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) service. The image includes optimizations
and packages designed to ease the integration process with the EC2 service. Amazon says it will be providing security and maintenance updates at no cost. The Amazon Linux AMI is provided at no additional charge to customers with an Amazon EC2 account. More

SingTel to Introduce Cloud Service Based on VCE Group

Cisco Systems and EMC announced that SingTel will introduce an enterprise, cloud based virtual data center service in Singapore, using technology
from the Virtual Computing Environment coalition they share with VMware. The services – scheduled for later in the year – are designed to make IT resources available
to businesses on an “as needed” basis.

Novell Launches Cloud Manager Software

Novell announced the launch of its new Novell Cloud Manager software. The company says the new product will allow customers to create and maintain a cloud environment as an extension of its existing data center

Oracle Releases Secure Global Desktop 4.6

Oracle announced the release of Secure Global Desktop 4.6. This solution is designed to delivers server-hosted applications and virtualized desktops to a wide variety of client devices. The company says the addition

Alcatel Introduces New GPON Terminals for 1G-bps Services

Alcatel-Lucent announced new GB passive optical network (GPON) based optical network terminals it says support 1G-bps services, as the demand for higher bandwidth services continues to increase. Alcatel also
announced the 1G-bps broadband service was deployed for EFB Fiber Optics – Chatanooga, TN, US’ municipally owned fiber to the premises network – and is now available for residential and business customers citywide.

Avaya Provides Data Center Network Technology for AGC

Avaya provided an 802.11n wireless LAN configuration and Ethernet switches for two AGC data centers in Perth, Australia. The data centers – which went live in June – house rack mounted Ethernet routing configurations
and Ethernet LAN configurations. They replace a collection of servers and routers as the company expands to 1,000 workers over the next two years. AGC provides fabrication, manufacturing, construction, and integrated services.

Cisco Providing IP/MPLS System for Spanish IP NGN

Cisco Systems Spain is deploying an Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) system – based on aggregation services routers – for Spanish video and Carrier Ethernet technology provider Albertis
Telecom, as it looks to enhance its IP Next Generation Network. Albertis is hoping to enable additional bandwidth for new capabilities such as video contribution and production, Carrier Ethernet transport, and primary and content distribution services,
allowing it to deliver new services.

Clearwire Announces New Coverage Area in Nashville

Clearwire announced the launch of its 4G services in the Nashville, Tennessee area. The company says the new coverage area will reach more than 980,000 people. As a
promotional incentive, the company is currently offering new customers a 50% service discount on their plans for the first two months. Like all of Clearwire’s existing coverage areas, this new location will also support customers subscribing to Sprint’s 4G
services.

Ericsson to Migrate Telenor’s Norwegian Services Network

Ericsson was contracted to consolidate Telenor’s mobile and fixed subscriber data into a centralized database – based on a data layered architecture – to convert its fixed network into a converged IP network. The
migration will allow Telenor – a Norwegian telecommunications services provider – to offer future voice and multimedia services, while also allowing for future 4G voice services, Ericsson said.

Ericsson to Provide Satellite Technology for Australian Broadcaster

Ericsson signed a five-year frame agreement with the ABC – an Australian national broadcaster – to provide satellite video compression technology to extend the ABC’s high and standard definition digital TV
programming. The initiative will bring digital, free-to-air TV throughout the country, as Australia undergoes the conversion from analog. Deployment will start in by the end of October. Currently, several hundred thousand rural Australians can access
digital, free-to-air TV using the Ericsson satellite video compression technology.

Ericsson Introduces Broadband Module for Consumer Devices

Ericsson unveiled a new mobile broadband module to allow consumer electronics devices – primarily laptops, netbooks, and tablets – to utilize high speed packet access Evolution networks. The F5521gw module offers
download speeds of up to 21M bps and potential upload speeds reaching 5.76M bps. The module supports all major and open source operating systems. It will be available in October.

Huawei Provides LTE/EPC Technology for Polish Network

Huawei Technologies‘ end to end longterm evolution/evolved packet core (LTE/EPC) technology was used by Polish carrier Mobyland’s newly deployed, commercial LTE/EPC network. Mobyland – which is working with 2G
services provider CenterNet – is claiming peak downlink speeds of more than 146M bps per user. Huawei deployed the mobile broadband network – country-wide – with its cutting-edge SingleRAN@Broad solution. This network is based on the 1800-MHz spectrum.

Motorola will provide its GB passive optical network solution to help RST Communications deliver new and advanced video and broadband services throughout its fiber to the home network. RST will use the technology
to improve broadband IP voice, video, and data delivery – as well as energy management applications – throughout the US states of North and South Carolina.

NEC, Partners Demonstrate Cutting Edge Transmission

NEC Japan announced it achieved quantum cryptographic key distribution at a record distance of 50 kilometers, using transmission from a single photon emitter. According to NEC, the result represents a milestone in
quantum key distribution, because it combines a single photon emitter – idea for optical transmission bands – with a prototype practical quantum cryptography system. Research was conducted alongside the Institute for Nano Quantum Information Electronics,
the University of Tokyo, and Fujitsu Laboratories.

Nokia Siemens to Upgrade Telekom Austria Radio Network

Nokia Siemens Networks was selected to replace and modernize a radio network – in Austria, Liechtenstein, and Slovenia – for Telekom Austria Group, as part of a new five year contract. The upgrade will
help it deploy future, high quality mobile broadband services, including next generation mobile technologies such as High Speed Packet Access Plus and longterm evolution. Nokia Siemens will also provide implementation, commissioning, network optimization,
maintenance, and network management services.

Computer Sciences Corporation CSC announced that it has released version 3.0 of its Insurance Industry Data Model. The model unifies numerous sources of data into a single representation of the entire insurance

SAIC Signs $22 Million Power Plant Construction Contract

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) signed a contract with USG Nevada to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the first phase of the company’s San Emidio project. The
project, which focuses on the construction of a power plant in northwest Nevada, will earn SAIC $22 million. This first phase will see the company relocate portions of an existing power plant at the new site. The project is expected to take about 15 months
to complete.

Cisco to Provide Content Delivery for BT Wholesale Service

Cisco Systems was selected to provide a content delivery system (CDS) for BT Wholesale, to serve as the backbone for its Content Connect open, online video delivery network. The CDS uses medianet technology to
establish broadband as a TV platform. Content Connect will deliver digital content to any computer, TV, or mobile device – on behalf of UK Internet service providers – presumably giving broadcasters access to a larger end user base, irrespective of service
provider or technology. Content Connect will be available in early 2011.

Teradata Allies with Cloudera for Hadoop-Based Data Warehouse Pipeline

Teradata announced the formation of a strategic partnership with Cloudera, a provider of Hadoop-based data management software and services. The goal of the service is to produce a pipeline through which customers
can use Cloudera’s Distribution for Hadoop (CDH) to funnel unstructured information into one of Teradata’s data warehouses. The forthcoming Teradata Hadoop Connector will be bundled with Cloudera Enterprise at no additional cost.

Adobe Releases HTML5 Update Pack for Illustrator

Adobe announced the release of an HTML 5 update pack for its Illustrator CS5 software. The pack contains support for HTML5 and CSS3, as well as an extension of Illustrator’s scalable vector graphics (SVG) capability.
The pack is available for both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems, and can be downloaded for free from Adobe Labs.

Apple to Unveil AirPrint Wireless Printing Beta Version

Apple is releasing a beta version of its AirPrint wireless printing system, for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch members of the iOS developer program. AirPrint automatically discovers the printers on a local network, and
can print text, photos, and graphics – without requiring drivers or download software – using a Wi-Fi connection. AirPrint will also be included in the free iOS 4.2 software update, available in November. HP’s ePrint enabled printers will be the first to
support the software, which is designed to support everything from entry level inkjet printers to office laser printers. iOS 4.2 devices can also access printers shared through a Mac or a PC.

Infor announced the launch of a new series of software solutions entitled Infor Express. The line will be designed to help companies address their industry-specific needs via pre-configured solutions. The first of

Boeing Receives Extension on ISS Sustained Engineering Contract

Boeing received an extension to its International Space Station (ISS) contract for sustained engineering from NASA. The deal includes provisions for management of ISS subsystems, analytical integration of flight
support, on-orbit engineering support, monitoring and trending, system performance, and anomaly resolution. The extension adds 5 years to the contract, and has a total value of $1.24 billion.

BT Signs 3-Year Extension with UK MOD

BT announced that it has signed a three-year extension to its Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) contract with the UK Ministry of Defence. The extension will bring an additional GBP 640 million to BT over its
duration. The extension adds a new focus on the continued development of secured information sharing technologies.

Cable & Wireless Signs Global Telecoms Framework Deal with UK Gov.

Cable & Wireless announced that it has signed a global telecoms framework agreement with the UK government. The contract allows for government agencies to purchase individual contracts from Cable & Wireless to provide
global networking, and a suite of IT services. The first agency to do so is the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), which signed a GBP 82 million contract with the company. Cable & Wireless expects adoption of its services through this framework to
continue to expand throughout the 2011-12 year.

Capgemini Signs MOU with UK’s Cabinet Office

Capgemini announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UK government’s Cabinet Office. This agreement does not affect pre-existing contracts, but will assure the company access to
future business opportunities in the form of additional contracts with various branches of the UK government. The deal also allows for Capgemini to approach government agencies with its catalogue of services.

CSC Receives $243 Million Contract from US DoT

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) announced that it has been named one of the five recipients of the Volpe Transportation Information Project Support Services (V-TRIPS) contract from the John A. Volpe National
Transportation Systems Center. The center, part of the US Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), has tasked the company with providing IT services to various aspects of development in the Volpe Center. The
contract has a duration of 5 years, and an estimated value of $234 million.

Global Crossing Signs Deal to Provide Telephony to Scottish Prisons

Google Updates Google Health Service with New Dashboard, Partners

Google announced that it has revamped its Google Health information center. Updates include an easier to use dashboard, with additional categories for
information; an increased focus on wellness, and wellness goals; and improved graphics. The company also announced a spate of new partnerships designed to provide users with easier methods of collecting their personal health information. These include
Fitbit, makers of a wearable health monitor; and WorkSmart, makers of CardioTrainer, a fitness tracking mobile app. Google says that it has also continued efforts to increase the number of healthcare providers which support uploading data to its Google

ICANN Releases 2011 Plan for Enhancing Internet Security

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) released the 2011 updated edition of its ICANN Plan for Enhancing
Internet Security, Stability & Resiliency
. The plan delineates the regulatory entity’s plans to enhance the titular areas of concern over the course of the 2010-11 year. Future enhancements named in the report include efforts to automate root zone

Apple China announced that new Wi-Fi models of its iPad device will be available to Chinese customers, beginning Friday, September 17th. The 1/2 inch thick models – available via Apple retail stores and select
resellers – offer 10 hours of battery life and can be used to stream Web content using a Wi-Fi connection. They range in price from 3,988 CNY ($591 USD) – for a 16-GB model – to 5,588 CNY, for 64GB.

eBay Wins Suit Against Craigslist

eBay announced that the Delaware Court of Chancery has ruled in its favor in its case against Craigslist. The ruling holds that “Jim [Buckmaster] and Craig [Newmark] breached their fiduciary duty of loyalty” and
controlled stockholders in order to implement a transaction that was unfair to eBay as a minority stockholder in Craigslist. The company will now be required to rescind all aspects of the detrimental transaction.

Google Fires Engineer After Accessing Users’ Private Accounts

Google terminated one of its engineers after discovering he had accessed users’ private accounts across several services, Gawker reports. David Barksdale was fired after the company
discovered he had been abusing his internal privileges to access the accounts of several users, including at least 4 minors, and subsequently using the information he discovered to harass the users. According to Gawker, a similar breach occurred at Google
once before, although no minors were involved. That engineer was also terminated. For its part Google responded by saying that it takes all necessary precautions to assure user privacy, but that necessity requires that a minimal number of employees will
always have access to users’ private accounts.

Kaspersky: Porn Sites Distributing Trojan to Android Phones

Kasperksy Lab has detected malware, categorized as a Trojan-SMS, which targets smartphones running on the Android platform. Cyber criminals are distributing the new malware via Russian-language sites that come out
on top of searches for pornographic videos. Also, the owners of these adult content sites are deliberately prompting Android users to download the new Trojan, while users of other platforms receive the desired content.

Kaspersky Helps Microsoft Give Stuxnet Virus the Boot

Kaspersky Lab has teamed up with Microsoft to resolve a zero-day vulnerability in Windows. The Stuxnet worm is considered an internal espionage tool that can gain access to
Siemens Win CC operating systems. Kaspersky had been studying the Stuxnet worm since July and reported its findings to Microsoft, and then assisted in helping to resolve the problem. Stuxnet had been targeting four
zero-day flaws in Windows.

McAfee warned users of a variant of the fake alert anti-virus family classified as FakeAlert-SpyPro.gen.ai. Once this malware is run on a local machine, it displays a warning indicating that the computer is infected
with various types of malware and that the user needs to click to clean the computer. If clicked, a fake scan appears and users are asked to purchase the software, but the message is really a virus.

Pew Finds 35% of US Adults Use Apps on Their Smartphones

The Pew Research Center released the findings of its latest report on the use of “Apps” among US adults. The study found that 35% of US adults report having at least one app on their personal cell phones,
although only 24% report actually using them. Of those surveyed, 13% reported having paid for an application. Pew’s survey also found that the population of apps users tends towards being younger, male, more highly educated, and more affluent.

Nokia to Welcome Microsoft’s Elop as CEO on 9/21

Nokia reported that CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will step down – on September 21st – and be replaced by Microsoft executive Stephen Elop. Elop, the Canadian who served as president for Microsoft’s $19 billion business
division, was once responsible for the Office suite. The struggling Finnish handset vendor hopes the change will help it regain footing in the highly competitive smartphone market. While Nokia remains the global leader in handset and smartphone market

More Safeguards Needed for Contractors: GAO

Contract employees for the government often have access to sensitive information so the Government Accountability Office (GAO) assessed which federal agencies’ contracts contain safety procedures for contractor access
to sensitive data. The GAO also reviewed how well these agencies safeguard sensitive information from contractors. As a result of the review, the GAO recommended that the Office of Federal Procurement
Policy ensure pending changes to the Federal Acquisition Regulation are enacted, including the use of nondisclosure agreements and notification of unauthorized disclosure or misuse of sensitive information.

SAP announced that its Korean business has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KT, a South Korean telecoms company, to jointly develop smart grid technology. The goal of the so called Jeju smart grid
test-bed project is to implement a pilot system to experiment with smart grid software created by SAP. The program will begin with 200 households, and is expected to expand to more than 1,000 over the next six to eight months.

comScore Releases US Mobile Phone Market Share Numbers for July 2010

comScore released its latest US mobile phone market share study for July 2010. The OEM index showed Samsung maintaining a lead over LG at 23.1% of the market, a 1 point increase over its position in April 2010. LG
fell .06% to 21.2%. Motorola took the worst hit, losing 1.8% of the market to come in third at 19.8%. Research in Motion (RIM) and Nokia rounded
out the top 5 with 9% and 7.8% respectively. The latest smartphone market share numbers showed RIM still on top with a shrinking 39.3%, Apple came in second at 23.8% of the market, showing a loss of 1.3% – despite the
launch of its updated iPhone 4. Google was the big winner, with its Android operating system snatching 5% of the market since April, giving the company control of 17% of the market. Microsoft continued to lose share,
dropping to 11.8%, and remaining in 4th place. Palm held steady at 4.9% of the market.

Motorola Introduces Portable, “Rugged” Smartphone

Motorola USA unveiled DEFY, which it says is a pocket-sized, Android based smartphone with 3.7 inch touchscreen display. It will be available exclusively in the US for customers of T-Mobile USA, later this year. According to Motorola, DEFY is both scratch and water resistant, as well as dust proof. Motorola also teamed with carrier US Cellular to announce the
GRASP, a QWERTY mobile phone.

Nokia Unveils New Line of Symbian-Based Smartphones

Nokia revealed a line of new phones built on the latest Symbian operating system at this year’s Nokia World event. The company added the Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6 to the already announced Nokia N8 to form the
backbone of its upcoming phone family. All of the listed models feature a touch screen, and access to Nokia’s Ovi app store, including numerous free services, such as Ovi Maps.

Verizon Wireless Launches BlackBerry Curve 9330

Verizon Wireless announced the launch of the latest version of Research in Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry Curve smartphone. The Curve 9330 includes a full qwerty keyboard, support for 3G and Wi-Fi, 512 MB of
internal memory (expandable to 32 GB with a microSD card), GPS support, and the standard lineup of BlackBerry services. The 9330 is also the first model in the line to be upgradable to RIM’s newest operating system, BlackBerry 6, when it is released in the
coming months. The Curve 9330 will be available starting September 16 for $29.99 (after $100 mail-in rebate), with the signing of a new two-year contract.

Twitter Launches Revamped Microblogging Site

Twitter launched a major redesign for its site. The new layout allows for significantly more information to be garnered from each tweet. Although individual tweets still retain the 140 character limit, users can now
click on a given message to open a secondary pane with more information, contextual facts, or multimedia content. Multimedia content can be provided by the author, or drawn from one of Twitter’s newly announced partners, which includes such sites as
DeviantART, Etsy, Vimeo, and YouTube. Additional text-based content will come in the form of information about the author, replies, geotagging, or related tweets. Other updates to Twitter.com include infinite scrolling
through Tweets, and mini profiles, which can be read from any instance of a user’s name on the site.

Seagate Momentus Drive Gains FIPS 140-2 Certification

Seagate announced that its Momentus Self-Encrypting Drive has gained FIPS 140-2 certification from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This clears the way for US and Canadian government
agencies with highly sensitive data to use these drives in their laptop units. The company says the Momentus is the first self-encrypting laptop drive to earn the FIPS 140-2 certification.

Seagate Teams with Samsung to Develop Enterprise-Class SSD Tech

Seagate announced that it has allied with Samsung to jointly develop controller technology for enterprise-level solid state drives. The goal of the alliance is to improve the performance, reliability, and endurance
of SSDs in order to make them more attractive to demanding enterprise customers. The technology will be launched in a forthcoming line of enterprise-class SSDs released by Seagate.

comScore Reports Facebook has Passed Google in Time Spent

Facebook users are spending more time each month on the social networking site than Google users are spending on the search engine, comScore reveals in its latest findings. The survey, which included all Google property sites – such as YouTube and Gmail – found that a total of 41.1 million minutes were spent on Facebook, while a slightly lower 39.8
million minutes were spent on Google’s network. Comscore also revealed Yahoo took the third spot for most time spent, with 37.7 million minutes being attributed to its network of sites.

Motorola demonstrated Medios, multi-screen service management software that integrates Web content to power IP video delivery to set tops, PCs, and mobile devices, whether over the managed or unmanaged network.

Yahoo Launches Connected TV Software on New Toshiba LED TV Line

Yahoo announced the launch of its Yahoo! Connected TV software on several new Toshiba televisions. Models from 46″ to 55″ in the company’s WX800 Cinema Series 3D LED line will now feature Yahoo’s Web connected app
suite. The software contains over 65 widgets, and access to 50,000 movies and television shows via Blockbuster.

YouTube Begins Trial of New Streaming Video Platform

YouTube announced that it will soon begin testing a new live video streaming platform. The platform is being made possible by a collaboration between YouTube and its four partners: Howcast, Next New Networks,
Rocketboom, and Young Hollywood. The new system uses a standard webcam and microphone combination to allow anyone to stream content over a YouTube channel. The trial will run on YouTube from September 12th through the 13th.

Cisco, Tencent Develop UC Collaboration Software

Cisco Systems China released Unified Communications (UC) for RTX, collaboration software developed in partnership with Tencent, a Chinese Internet services provider. It is
based on Cisco UC technology and Tencent’s network instant messaging platform. The desktop application unifies voice, video, data, and applications, the companies said, by embedding rich applications such as IP communications, click-to-dial voice and video
conferencing, virtual voicemail, SMS, and Web sharing.

NEC Deploys IP Telephony for Pudong, China Hotel

NEC China installed an IP telephony system for the Intercontinental Shanghai Expo, a hotel located adjacent to the World Expo site in Pudong. The telephony system is based on NEC’s UNIVERGE SV8500 communication server,

Amazon Begins Accepting American Express Rewards Points as Payment

Amazon formed a partnership with American Express which will allow cardholders to use their accumulated membership reward points to purchase items from the site. American Express members are required to fill out a
one-time form to activate the use of membership rewards on their accounts. After this, users can choose to fund their purchases with reward points in exactly the same way they would choose any other form of payment. More information, including the sign-up

Fujitsu Releases SaaS Product for Wireless Tracking

Fujitsu Japan released its TRIAS/TR-SaaS, a Software as a Service (SaaS) based solution that uses a digital tachograph with wireless communications capabilities, for the Japanese trucking industry. According to
Fujitsu, it collects vehicle operations data – in real time – and manages and analyzes data on drive operations. It has wireless communications capabilities with a SaaS based driving support system that is used over the Internet. Users can analyze driving
information from a digital tachograph installed on a vehicle, with just a PC and an Internet connection.
