FBI Investigating AT&T Security Breach

Information Week reported that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has asked Gawker Media‘s ValleyWag blog to preserve all documents
related to a security breach on AT&T‘s Web site that led to the disclosure of 114,000 email addresses of Apple iPad owners, including those of high-profile celebrities and politicians. Gawker Media reported the incident
last week after it was contacted by Goatse Security, a group of security experts – or hackers – depending on one’s point of view. Goatse Security said it entered AT&T network in order to show that the personal data of iPad users is not fully secure. AT&T
told The New York Times that Goatse actually went to great lengths to breach Web site security, saying “unauthorized computer `hackers’ maliciously exploited a function designed
to make your iPad log-in process faster.”

US CERT Understaffed, Not Able to Protect Systems: Report

The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US CERT), which is charged with monitoring Internet threats and helping to secure the government’s computer systems, is unable to monitor networks or analyze threats in
real time, and it lacks the authority and staff it needs to do its job, according to a report released by the US Department of Homeland Security‘s Inspector General. US CERT must share information about threats and trends
more quickly and in greater detail with other federal departments so they can better protect themselves, according to the Inspector General’s findings. The 35-page report says US
CERT, which is part of DHS, has made progress helping federal agencies protect against cyber threats, including the creation of a cyber center, but concluded it does not have the enforcement authority it needs to get other federal agencies to take the
steps required to secure their systems. The report also said US CERT has been plagued with staff shortages and leadership turnover, hindering its ability to retain qualified staff. In a detailed response to the report, DHS Undersecretary Rand Beers noted
that the inspector general did not make a recommendation on how the agency could gain more enforcement authority. He said the agency agrees that giving US CERT more formal authority would be helpful.

AT&T Suspends iPhone 4 Pre-Ordering

AT&T has suspended pre-orders for the Apple iPhone 4 after problems with its pre-ordering system, and after both the carrier and Apple received record numbers of pre-orders for the
new smartphone, which is expected to be available June 24. Those who visited AT&T’s Web site to pre-order the device saw the message: “Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended.” AT&T said the volume of pre-orders was 10 times higher than last year’s
pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G and that “given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we’re suspending pre-ordering … in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already
received.” Apple’s pre-ordering page was up and running yesterday despite reported heavy demand. More disturbing than the suspension of AT&T’s pre-ordering system were reports of possible data breaches. Tech blog Gizmodo posted readers’ stories of trying to log into their AT&T accounts to upgrade to the newest iPhone and being sent instead into strangers’ accounts. That could set the stage for identity theft scams.
