Verizon Publicly Releases Its Data Breach Research Framework

In an initiative to make it easier for companies to analyze and exchange data about security breaches, Verizon Business is publicly releasing the research framework used for its Data Breach Investigations
Reports. The Verizon Incident-Sharing (VerIS) framework addresses the problem of not having a common standard for the collection of security-incident data and analysis. Businesses and government agencies currently use a variety of different – and often
incompatible – systems to collect this data, making it difficult to quickly identify major trends in security breaches and to take collective action. Verizon hopes the release of its incident-sharing framework will provide enterprises with a common
structure for describing and analyzing security incidents so they can compare their security data with Verizon’s data breach reports, as well as with data of other organizations that use the VerIS framework, to gain a better understanding of how security
breaches occur. Companies can access Verizon’s framework online, at a portal where other resources are also available. Verizon said it plans to name an advisory board to
oversee the evolution of the VerIS framework to ensure it meets the needs of all organizations across all sectors.

Skype Takes Down Windows Mobile, Skype Lite for Java Phones Versions

Skype has pulled its Windows Mobile version, and “Skype Lite” for Java handsets from its download page. The move comes as a result of what the company felt was a degraded user experience provided by the two mobile
applications. A blog post by a company spokesman blamed the difficulty of maintaining a consistent user experience across the myriad devices in the Windows Mobile lineup for the withdrawal of that version; and the country restrictions and minute usage
incurred by Skype Lite as the reasons for its removal. All other version of Skype are still available for download, and current user of the affected apps may continue to use existing installations of the software. The company has not delineated any plans
for replacement versions, although its recent deal with Verizon should guarantee several new releases for that carrier’s customers in the near future.
