Microsoft Finds No Problem with Windows 7 Battery Replacement Warning

Microsoft released a statement revealing its findings on an alleged issue with Windows 7 erroneously reporting degraded batteries, and possibly causing the batteries to degrade in the first place. The company has
decided that the warning built into Windows 7 is indeed functioning as intended, and the batteries in question should have triggered the message. The blog post which revealed this decision listed a number of the factors the company examined during its
investigation. Among them was a lack of confirmation of any new batteries causing the reports, which effectively nullified a large portion of the supposed complaints. Additionally, the posting went on to detail the amount of time the company expects a
battery to be in use before degradation occurs – 12 months – and the fact that the recent introduction of the battery warning feature may have caused the sudden spike in reports of bad reports. Despite these findings Microsoft still suggests that users who believe their batteries are being reported as needing replacement in error contact them, or the PC’s manufacturer.

Google announced the release of its new Buzz social networking application. The new service, which is integrated into users’ Gmail accounts, allows for the sharing of short updates,
photos, and videos, similar to Twitter. The service automatically pulls people of interest from users’ contacts, and other Gmail users they have had email conversations with. It then builds a feed out of the updates provided by those users, and is able to
sort them by relevancy. These features can all be integrated with a user’s existing Flickr and Twitter accounts. The company has said that it plans to keep the service as open as possible, and even attributes portions of the development of Buzz to the
openness of the aforementioned competitors. Also similar to Twitter, the service has built in support for locational awareness when it is used from a GPS enabled mobile phone. Google has also mentioned that it is currently developing a version of Buzz
which will be available to businesses and schools using Google Apps. The company said that it has begun the rollout of the new service, but it may not reach all Gmail users for a few days. The blogosphere is active with posts sounding privacy alarms over
Buzz, which is added to users’ Gmail accounts without their having chosen to use it. Under the newest version of Gmail, users have an easy-to-find link at the bottom of the page to turn off Buzz. The process is more complex under earlier versions of the
email client.
